Fall brings new fashion and a bunch of new YA! What could be better than fiction + fashion? Plus, at the end of the post, read about My September Fiction + Fashion themed Freebie Fridays!
Pick one of these three fall fashion trends and I’ll pick you a fall YA book!
Fashion Trend #1: Moody, romantic florals
Moody and dramatic rather than frilly and feminine, dark florals are for those who want to look romantic and edgy all at the same time. (Fashions by Oscar de la Renta, Temperley London, Etro)
YA Match: Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore
Could there be a more perfect match, both in cover and description?
For nearly a century, the Nomeolvides women have tended the grounds of La Pradera, the lush estate gardens that enchant guests from around the world. They’ve also hidden a tragic legacy: if they fall in love too deeply, their lovers vanish. But then, after generations of vanishings, a strange boy appears in the gardens. The boy is a mystery to Estrella, the Nomeolvides girl who finds him, and to her family, but he’s even more a mystery to himself; he knows nothing more about who he is or where he came from than his first name. As Estrella tries to help Fel piece together his unknown past, La Pradera leads them to secrets as dangerous as they are magical in this stunning exploration of love, loss, and family.
This book comes out October 5 from Feiwel and Friends.
Fashion Trend #2: PJ-inspired clothing
Part of the 2017 menswear trend, these styles are more inspired by oversized men’s pajamas and robes than frilly women’s lingerie. (Fashions by Fendi, Rochas and Givenchy.)
YA Match: A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland
I have been accused of being a hermit, which is apparently one step from agoraphobia. What could be more perfect than wearing PJs but being able to claim you’re wearing clothes?
Ever since Esther Solar’s grandfather was cursed by Death, everyone in her family has been doomed to suffer one great fear in their lifetime. Esther’s father is agoraphobic and hasn’t left the basement in six years, her twin brother can’t be in the dark without a light on, and her mother is terrified of bad luck. Esther doesn’t know what her great fear is yet (nor does she want to), a feat achieved by avoiding pretty much everything. Elevators, small spaces, and crowds are all off-limits. So are haircuts, spiders, dolls, mirrors and three dozen other phobias she keeps a record of in her semi-definitive list of worst nightmares.
Then Esther is pickpocketed by Jonah Smallwood, an old elementary school classmate. Along with her phone, money and a fruit roll-up she’d been saving, Jonah also steals her list of fears. Despite the theft, Esther and Jonah become friends, and he sets a challenge for them: in an effort to break the curse that has crippled her family, they will meet every Sunday of senior year to work their way through the list, facing one terrifying fear at a time, including one that Esther hadn’t counted on: love.
This book comes out September 5 from Putnam.
Fashion Trend #3: Snake Motifs
These snake accessories are another trend that blends beauty and edginess in a dramatic way (fashions by Bulgari and Gucci).
YA Match: Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao
Eighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be Empress of Feng Lu. But only if she embraces the darkness within her. Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng’s majestic future.
But is the price of the throne too high? Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins–sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute.
This book comes out October 10 by Philomel.
