Jen’s Quick Take on The Killer Question

  • The Killer Question is an epistolary murder mystery made up of emails, group texts, and other documents
  • The book is set in a small town pub called The Case is Altered in Hertfordshire
  • If you haven’t read any of Janice Hallett’s books and enjoy a good puzzle, you are in for a treat. This reminded me most of The Appeal, with a lot of comical bickering.
  • Since 2021, Janice Hallett has been putting out an amazing, puzzling book each year! These are not quick and easy reads; you have to pay attention and try to figure out what she’s up to.
  • I think my favorite Janice Hallett book is The Mysterious Case of the Alpteron Angels (2023), with The Twyford Code (2022) as a close second. But you can’t go wrong with The Appeal (2021) or The Examiner (2024) either.
  • Publication Date: September 23, 2025 by Atria Books. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy!

Answering My Main Questions About The Killer Question

I’ve tried to do plot summaries of these books, but they don’t really work in a linear fashion.

I will first list my main questions about the book, then explain some of things that confused me and might confuse you.

  • Who killed the man in the orange puffer jacket and why?
  • What is Operation Honeyguide and what does it have to do with the pub quizzes?
  • Who is the mysterious General?

As always, leave questions, corrections, and complaints in the comments below!

Setting the Scene

Dominic Eastwood is trying to pitch a true crime case to Netflix involving his Uncle Mal and Aunt Sue.

Malcolm “Mal” and Suzanne “Sue” Eastwood ran a pub called The Case is Altered in Fernley from 2017 to 2019. This was a second career from them after retirement. As with all a group of other Hertfordshire pubs (all owned by a company called Ye Olde Goat Brewery), they offer popular pub quiz nights.

As our story opens, intense pub quizzer Chris “Thor’s Hammer” Thorogood and his team The Plucky Losers have won six out of the seven quizzes held by The Case is Altered in September 2019.

But one night, a team shows up. They are known by the local pub quiz community to cheat. Mal has an altercation with one of them, a guy wearing an orange puffer jacket (known as “the Satsuma”) and throws him out of the pub. The body of “the Satsuma” ends up in the River Colne, weighted down by a metal implement from the Eastwood’s shed.

Who killed The Satsuma and why?

The local police start investigating the death of the man in the orange puffer jacket, interviewing many witnesses.

But let’s back up and explore:

The Pub Quiz Cheating Drama

Red sign that says Keep Calm and Quiz on

After Mal drives away the guy in the orange puffer, a new team called The Shadow Nights, led by a mysterious figure called The General, shows up at The Altered Case and. To the dismay of the Plucky Losers, the Shadow Knights beat them. Repeatedly.

Chris becomes extremely upset about having his team dethroned like this. He starts nagging his teammates to take the quizzes more seriously, renames his team, and even swaps out players. Convinced he needs a younger player to answer some of the questions, he recruits a young unhoused woman named Fiona.

What’s with Operation Honeyguide?

A Black woman police officer interrogates a suspect

About 25% through the book, the narrative begins to include transcripts of interviews and police reports back from 2014. These concern a police operation in Hulme called Operation Honeyguide.

They involve none other than Sergeant Suzanne Eastwood and Constable Malcolm Eastwood. Yes, Mal and Sue used to work as police officers.

What is Operation Honeyguide? A top secret operation run by Melody “Dee” Obasi. The goal is to recover kidnapping victims Beata Novak and Chloe Cunningham. Beata’s boyfriend Darren Chester was a local drug dealer who had a falling out with his employees, the Maddox brothers. It’s assumed that the Maddox brothers took both Beata and Chloe, whoalso dated Derek. Dee asks Mal and Sue to liase with Chloe’s desperate parents, Caroline and Piers Cunningham, who have secretly contacted the police against the kidnapper’s orders.

Piers tells Mal and Sue that he will pay the kidnappers $2 million (which more than covers the money Darren stole) to get Chloe back. When Mal and Sue hesitate, Piers says they will reveal a secret Sue told Caroline: that Mal and Sue covered up  a murder.

What Does Operation Honeyguide have to do with the events in 2019?

Operation Honeyguide was NOT really an attempt to rescue Beata and Chloe, who did not exist.

Honeyguide was really a sting operation to catch Mal and Sue. They’d been corrupt for a while, but a small group of officers (including DS Melody “Dee” Obasi and her colleage Natalie) determined to catch them in the act of stealing the money that Piers and Caroline were willing to pay the kidnappers.

After the Honeyguide sting, Mel and Sue got away with just being fired, rather than prosecuted.

Mel and Sue then began to work at pubs and eventually be hired to manage The Altered Case.

Piers and Caroline weren’t real either.

Ian and Tanya Frost were brother and sister, both actors. They claim that a burglar terrorized and killed their mothe. They police hire them to portray Chloe Cunningham’s distraught parents for the sting operation.

Summary of Mal and Sue:

chalkboard sign with hours of the case is altered pub

Mal and Sue, Version One:

Married couple who ran the pub “The Case is Altered” in Fernley from 2017 to 2019 as a second career after retirement.

Mal and Sue, Version Two:

Bent coppers. They conned people out of their life savings. They also blackmailed man named Ramsey whose wife died under somewhat suspicious circumstances. Ramsay told Mal and Sue it was a mercy killing, but it was not. Ramsey blackmailed the Eastwoods to keep quiet.

Mal and Sue Version Three:

The “Mal and Sue” we see in 2019 are really … brother and sister actors Tanya and Ian Frost. What?

More Characters Who Are Not Who They Seem:

Major spoilers ahead!

So, to recap: Sue and Mel get trapped in the sting operation and fired as a result. Dee Obasi is still very unhappy about this and, years later, decides to look up the Eastwoods and see if they have scammed anyone else.

Dee learns that Mel and Sue are running a pub. So she sends a former colleague, Glen Knight, who knew the Eastwoods, to pop into the pub with his quiz team, The Shadow Knights.

Glen Perry is The General?

Yes. Glen immediately realizes that “Mal” and “Sue” are not who they say they are. He sends Dee a picture and she recognizes them as Tanya and Ian.

Who is Cloud Perry, the hippie houseboat guy?

Cloud Perry is really DCI Lewis Perry, Dee’s boss (and also the former boss of Sue and Mal). Lewis Perry has retired and in the book has disguised himself as a hippie who lives on a houseboat with his girlfriend “Wind.”

Cloud (Lewis) agreed to pop into the pub and positively identify Tanya and Ian, as he’d known both them and the Eastwoods. Then he found the body of the Orange Puffer Guy.

Toward the end of the book, “Cloud” confronts “Sue” and “Mal” and asks them who he is. Just then Dee walks in and arrests them.

Tanya and Ian killed the real Sue and Mal but also a former actor named Luke Goode (Orange Puffer Guy) who recognized them.

Who is Fiona Hammond?

A young unhoused girl that newly recruited quizzer Andrew befriended. She’s now living in Fernley and Andrew invited her to join The Plucky Losers, now renamed The Sturdy Challengers. Later, Sue and Mel ask Fiona to work at The Case is Altered. After that, Dee and the police recruit her to spy on Mal and Sue. She steals something out of their safe (a gun, which is actually a stage prop.)

What was the significance of The Dark Knights cheating?

Photo of a bar with wooden stools, shelves of liquor bottles and photos

Peter of the Lusty Lass figures out that the Shadow Knights are cheating. Because Peter was in the army, he guessed that The Dark Knights were using NanoComm, tiny earpieces and hidden microphones. Peter jammed their signal so they couldn’t cheat.

The General (Glen Knight) wanted Sue and Mel know what being cheated and conned felt like. They were working with Cloud.  The whole quiz team are police officers.

Just like Ian and Tanya, Dee couldn’t let the Mal and Sue case go. Glen Knight offers to drop in at The Altered case, but when he does, he realizes that “Sue” and “Mal” are not the real Sue and Mal. He shows Dee a photo and she presumably recognizes Ian and Tanya.

Dee is the one in the parking lot wearing a NanoComm, looking up questions that the team does not know.

Why did Tanya and Ian kill Sue and Mal?

They were upset and horrified that the two of them didn’t end up in prison, that they didn’t have to give back the money they blackmailed (it’s gone).  Tanya and Ian go on to spy on Mal and Sue as they embark on jobs as a barman (Mal) and pub Manager (Sue.)

After the real Mal and Sue are hired to manage the pub, Tanya messages them about her cleaning company and offers to clean the pub. She and Ian kill Mal and Sue and bury their bodies.

Why does The Case is Altered mean, anyway?

Photo of a pub called The Case is Altered

Apparently it is a very common name for pubs in the UK. According to this article on the website of a pub with that name, the phrase was first used by Edmund Plowden, a sixteenth century lawyer. New evidence in a case he was dealing with in court required re-evaluation of the case, and possibly a new approach. Ben Jonson then used it for a comedy published in 1609.

Why did Dee deface the Altered Case pub sign?

Dee feels a lot of anger toward the legal system. If Sue and Mal faced consequences for their actions, three people might still be alive (including Sue and Mal)
