09.28.2025 by Jen Ryland // Leave a Comment

My 100% human written Readers Guide to The Killing Stones by Ann Cleeves has Jen’s Quick Take, a character list, plus spoilers and the ending explained. This is my first Ann Cleeves book and is listed as part of a new series, but that’s not exactly the case. Let’s chat about it!

  • While The Killing Stones is listed on Goodreads as Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves #1, it is also a continuation of the Shetland series, albeit with a new location: the Orkney Islands (see map below).
  • Though main character Jimmy was born in Fair Isle (Shetland) he and his partner Willow live in Orkney.
  • I have watched a few episodes of Shetland, but never read any of the books. Still, I think this can work as a standalone, even if I was missing all the backstory between the characters.
  • In this case, a close friend of Jimmy turns up dead and he and Willow work the case together in the days leading up to Christmas.
  • I really enjoyed this one and want to try to catch up on the series.
  • Publication date: September 30, 2025 by Viking Books. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy for review.

The stones of Westray might have been inspired by this, though the fictional ones must be smaller.

While the title of The Killing Stones suggests that the murder might have to do with Orkney history, that is NOT the case!

When the main suspect (Paul Johnson) ended up dead, I knew that the resolution would be more creative.

I see that many readers thought the fact that Archie’s teenage son Lawrie was the killer was a bit out of nowhere.

Yes, but the clues were there. Vaila said many times that Lawrie was addicted to his computer, and seemed concerned about him. She also mentions Lawrie being close to George.

Lucy mentions to Jimmy that George was tasked with being a counselor to the boys, and talking to them about their problems.

Why did Lawrie Kill Archie?

They had a huge argument about the nude photos of classmates that Lawrie was using to blackmail girls. Archie said he would no longer leave the farm to Lawrie, and Lawrie snapped.

Why did Lawrie Kill George?

It’s funny that George is never actually IN the story until his body is found.

Lawrie thought George knew that he’d killed Archie and wanted to persuade Lawrie to confess. George also know about Lawrie’s sexting extortion at school.

Why did Lawrie Kill Tony?

Tony saw Lawrie having a huge fight with Archie right before Archie’s murder. So Tony decided to blackmail Lawrie into letting him use Archie’s father’s research for his work.

Qeustions? Think I missed something or got it wrong? Please leave me a comment.
