Their Double Lives: Jen’s Quick Take

Super Twisty New Thriller for May 2025: Their Double Lives
  • Their Double Lives is a twisty thriller that reminded me of The Kind Worth Killing and The Perfect Divorce
  • In other words, if you love stories about unlikeable characters crossing and double-crossing each other, this book is perfect for you!
  • The cast of characters is actually pretty small and the setting is the Jersey Shore
  • Their Double Lives makes a great summer or beach read
  • Publication date: May 20, 2025 by Scarlet/Penzler Publishers. Thanks to the publisher for the review copy.

As she’s processing this, Fuller’s fiancee, Poppy Jade “PJ” starts choking at the table and dies. A panicked Kim immediately flushes the poison she’d been given to kill Fuller.

We see PJ arrange to meet Tony and get him to fall for her. Her best friend Matt is in on the plan.

Kim gets an envelope from a mystery person who wants her to kill Tony for $20,000.

When questioned by the police after PJ’s death, Tony reveals that he was involved in a robbery that killed a woman. He agreed to testify against the other robber, Jose Sanchez, and charges were dropped against him. After that, he changed his name and cleaned up his act.

As the rest of the group waits to be questioned, Carla and Ron fight, and Ron announces he’s filed for divorce.

PJ‘s mother was the woman killed by Tony and Jose. PJ and Matt went to see Jose in prison, who insisted that Tony pulled the trigger and then framed him.

Introducing: The Murder Book

PJ agrees to move in with Tony and brings her murder book, a plan of how she’s going to romance and then poison Tony for revenge.

Kim gets a call from the stranger and apologizes for not completing her assignment. She recalls picking up the two poisons she was supposed to use to kill Tony.

Matt is upset with PJ as he thinks she’s falling for Tony. Which is kind of true. Meanwhile, Anthony buys an engagement ring for PJ. When he’s putting something away in her closet, he finds her murder book and is completely shocked.

Kim meets a new caddy at the club, Terry. Then she gets a text from Maddy who says they need to talk.

PJ and Tony are planning a romantic trip to Hawaii.

Kim goes to meet Maddy, who reveals that a weird couple was at the bar, talking about PJs. When Maddy describes the couple, Kim realizes who they were: Tony and Carla.

A furious Tony decides that cheating with Carla would be his first act of revenge against PJ.

Tony plans to marry PJ, then annul the marriage. But his PI calls with information: PJ is actually Paulina Jensen, the daughter of the woman killed in the robbery.

Tony goes over to Kim’s place. She asks him if he knew that she worked at the country club before he joined it. He tells her it was just a coincidence and offers money for Murphy’s surgery.

PJ and Anthony are in Maui. Poppy considers just forgiving Tony.  Carla and Ron also turn up, and Poppy is convinced they are stalking her.

Kim gets another note from her stranger, who insists she has to finish the job. She gets a threatening call saying that she has to kill Tony or she will die.

Anthony proposes to Poppy.

Kim and Murphy go to Tony’s beach house. He realizes he’s out of milk and leaves her there. She finds PJ’s murder book and quickly takes photos of it before Tony gets back. She asks him if he’s ever been to Night Shift, Maddy’s bar. He says no but she knows he’s lying.

PJ and Matt argue but he agrees to meet Tony. As PJ is making them all dinner, Matt texts her a picture of Tony making out with Carla.

Kim checks out the photos of the murder book and realizes PJ was Paulina. Was she the Stranger? No because the Stranger contacted her after PJ died. She also realizes that Tony hired a PI after he found the book, which was shortly before he joined the country club. It was all a planned double cross.

The Stranger calls and Kim asks: “are you Matthew?”

PJ is furious about Tony’s cheating. She calls Matt and tells him that Tony is buying a beach house near Ron and Carla’s and joining their club. It’s time to change the revenge plan. Matt suggests they kill Tony and frame Carla.

The Stranger admits to Kim that yes, he is Matt. She tells him they need to talk and invites him over. When he gets there she realizes he’s Terry, the new caddy.

Let’s review who everyone really is:

Who Everyone Really Is:

  • Kim is Tony’s former high school girlfriend
  • Anthony Fuller is Tony Fiore: Brooklyn bad guy who was involved in a robbery that killed a woman.
  • Poppy Jade is Paulina Jensen: daughter of Monica Jensen, the woman killed in the robbery.
  • Jose Sanchez is Tommy’s partner in the robbery that killed PJ’s mother.
  • Terry, the new caddy, is actually Matt (who cut his hair)

Matt explains everything: his revenge plan with Paulina, and Matt’s certainty that Tony killed PJ.

Matt says that he heard Kim crying about her dog at the country club and he and PJ decided to ask her to kill Tony. Okay this really threw me off but I guess it happened before Kim formally met “Terry.” Matt followed Tony around and realized he was cheating. But PJ supposedly had a failsafe backup plan for killing Tony.

Tony shows PJ the house at the Jersey shore he wants to buy and after that they go to Ron and Carla’s beach house. Carla takes Tony aside and tells him she got the poison flower seeds in Hawaii. Tony reflects that Carla doesn’t know that Ron is planning to dump her.

Their Double Lives: The Ending Explained

Matt and Kim discuss the way PJ died and Matt realizes that Tony got the idea for the poison from PJ’s murder book.

Glass bottle with purple liquid inside labeled "poison"

On the day of her murder, PJ reflects on her hate for Tony and the fact that Matt got a job at the country club. As she is poisoned and dies, she realizes that Tony pulled a fast one on her.

Ron gets a mysterious call from PJ, who wants to let him know that Carla is cheating with Tony. PJ also wants Ron to kill Tony by spiking his drink. He agrees.

Poppy writes a note to Matt saying that she has proof on a flash drive that Ron agreed to kill Tony. She asks that if anything happens to her, that he makes Tony pay.

Epilogue:

Murphy had his surgery and is doing well. Kim is moving to DC to start over. Tony has a new girlfriend and Carla and Ron are separated.

Matt poisons Tony with a Circle of fire Hawaiian cocktail, washes the glass, sends the police the flash drive with evidence of Tony and Carla plotting agains PJ and Ron agreeing to kill Tony for cheating with Carla, and rides off in to the sunset as the ambulance pulls in. Go, Matt!
