Jen’s Quick Take on The Unknown

- It’s hard to know what to expect from Riley Sager! He started out with horror movie/urban legend inspired suspense, but then wrote a truly wacky unreliable narrator story (The House Across the Lake), an amazing modern Gothic (The Only One Left), a trauma-based suspense story with”Stand by Me”(and paranormal) vibes (Middle of the Night), and a historical Agatha Christie inspired mystery (With a Vengeance)
- So what IS The Unknown about, exactly (without spoilers)? It’s a spooky story set on a deserted island. A struggling actress is cast in the role of a lifetime based on a notorious true crime case from the 1920s. The catch: the cast has to live on the island (which has no electricity), wear period costumes, and hold séances. Okay, then!
- The fun of this story was trying to figure out where it was going. I had a sense of what I suspected, and was close to being right. Without spoilers, in the end it was similar to a very famous classic mystery.
- I was hoping it would be as jaw-dropping as The Only One Left, but that’s a lot to ask for. If you didn’t like that book, you will probably prefer this one. I enjoyed it overall for the vibe factor!
- Publication date August 4, 2026 by Dutton. I bought my own copy!

Plot Summary for The Unknown
The narrative alternates between present-day New Avalon Island, Vermont and Daisy Rue’s diary from 1926.
Daisy’s Diary June 15, 2026
Only two people remain. The Darkness is an evil force that has claimed all the others and will remain after everyone is gone.
The present: New Avalon

Marin Keane arrives in Vermont for her first big role: a low budget elevated horror movie. Loretta, the producer, picks Marin up and they head by boat to New Avalon island. During the five-day shoot, they will be living as if it were 1926.
They offered Marin the role at the last minute after her predecessor dropped out. For her audition, she told a ghost story.Marin gets a warning text from the actress she replaced: don’t go to the inland.
The history of New Avalon is creepy. In 1926, five women vanished completely, leaving their dresses hanging from the branches of a large tree. Their disappearance has never been solved. The state of Vermont bought the island from Ruth Hume Semple, a medium and one of the missing women.
When Marin arrives, she’s asked to sign a release and an NDA. Marin notices many carved symbols of a six-petaled flower (that Brad calls a hex sign) around the island.
The cast assembles for a table read and has to turn in their cell phones. Marin panics when she realizes her part is very major.
Daisy’s Diary: June 6 1926

Daisy is an orphan who was taken in by Ruth Hume Semple. Ruth brings her to New Avalon, which her wealthy father Randolph developed. Daisy meets the other women on the island: Jonquil, Phoebe and Katrina.
The Present: New Avalon
Ronan plans to hold a séance that night. He gives Daisy’s diary to Marin to help her understand her character better.
Daisy’s Diary: June 7 1926

Daisy is afraid of the woods, but all the women go exploring. They find hex signs all over the trees, and then come upon a clearing surrounded by trees. In the center is a huge stone slab.
Mrs. Semple pops up and tells the that the woman who lived on the island dabbled in the dark arts. The residents of the mainland used to bring articles of clothing from sick relatives, hoping they’d be cured. She tells them the symbols are called hexafoils.
