Jen’s Quick Take on The Party in the Woods

- If you’re a regular here, you know that I adore what I call “I Know What You Did Last Summer” books. If you’re not familiar with the Lois Duncan book, the premise is Friends With a Secret, and it’s a good one. These stories usually involve a friend group that has members who have committed and/or covered up a murder. The result? The group is bound together by the dark secret they are keeping.
- I keep a book list of these Friends With Secrets titles, and Party in the Woods is a great addition!
- Publication date: November 10 2026 by Flatiron/Cedar and Pine. Thanks to them for my advance copy.
What is The Party in the Woods about?
Annie’s in a tough spot. Her landlord has ended their lease, and she, her husband Colm, and their children need a new place to live in Dublin, where there’s a worrisome shortage of affordable housing. On top of that, the body of one of Annie’s friends from her youth, turned up in the woods. Seán Salinger disappeared in 2003 during a rave in the woods organized by the friend group, and has not been seen since. The police want to interview Annie and her friends, who nervously re-connect now that a missing persons case has turned into a homicide investigation.
What I Thought of Party in the Woods
Friends With Secrets books can lean campy at times, so I love to find a title that feels more developed and grittier. I loved that the book incorporated the affordable housing in Ireland, class differences within the friend group, the challenges of parenting a child on the autism spectrum, and rave culture (I need to listen to trance and techno music to get in the spirit of the book!)
The plot was gripping, with multiple sources of tension both within the friend group and without. I guessed part of the ending but there was another part that took me by surprise.
Party in the Woods: Spoilers and the Ending Explained
So there was a LOT going on. Seán has been missing for over twenty years, and his body is finally found. The police suspect murder, and want to talk to the friend group. This includes:
- Annie
- Annie’s ex-boyfriend Fran
- Julian Doyle, who was Annie’s close friend and now married to Rachel, Seán’s sister
- Moe
- Ozzy, who was there the night Seán disappeared but also seems to have vanished
There’s a dispute over when Seán was last seen: May 2 with his friends, or the next day on CCTV.
Annie gave Moe an alibi, but it seems like the police will arrest him.
But there was also a HUGE grudge between Fran and Seán. The police caught both of them with drugs back in the 00s, but Seán’s wealthy parents helped him get a deal, which involved blaming Fran, who ended up doing prison time.
Moe, who has a history of substance abuse, OD’s and ends up a coma. Before that, Moe told Ciara, his pregnant girlfriend, that he knew who killed Sean. Ciara thinks someone tried to kill Moe.
Annie, whose marriage is in a fragile state, starts hanging around with Fran again. Annie’s lawyer tells her to keep her distance from her old friends, but she doesn’t listen.
Then Annie learns that Ozzy isn’t missing, he’s dead. Annie playfully slipped him a pill, not knowing he had epilepsy, and the pill gave him a fatal seizure. She’s distraught. (I’m unsure about whether her friends protected her from this, or she blocked it out.)
Finally, we learn Julian was the villain all along. He killed Ozzy, he killed Seán, and he tried to kill Moe. He also pushed his wife Rachel down the stairs. For the why behind it all, see the Q and A!
Q and A about The Party in the Woods (More Spoilers)
Annie slipped him a pill at the rave and he had a seizure. Julian, who narrowly escaped a charged of drug possession, got rid of Fran and smothered Ozzy with a pillow rather than calling for help. Then Julian made Seán help him bury Ozzy’s body.
Seán and Ozzy were in a situationship. After Seán helps him bury Ozzy’s body, Julian then killed Seán. Julian tried to claim that Seán’s death was a tragic accident. Moe knew the truth, as Moe helped Julian get rid of Seán’s body. Moe also put on Seán’s hoodie to confuse things more.
I guess because Julian could blame Ozzy’s death on Annie and Seán’s death on an accident, Moe stayed alive. Until Seán’s body turned up and the police started sniffing around. At that point, Julian roofied Moe and then staged the overdose to keep him quiet.
Because so much time passed and there was no evidence, Julian gets a suspended sentence. Also, Julian’s friend Eddie muddied the water by backing up Julian’s story. Rachel has evidence that Julian was also insider trading, but apparently no one in Ireland cares about that. But THEN Julian dies in a mysterious drive-by shooting. Was it Sheila, Moe’s mother, who pulled the trigger? Let me know your thoughts in comments!
