Jen’s Quick Take on The Paris Files

Original photo of a copy of The Paris Files, which shows a an elaborate staircase in a Parisian apartment building
  • The Paris Files is epistolary suspense, with gaslighting and (possibly) unreliable narrators
  • Adding it to my list of Vacation Thrillers and Suspense
  • The narrative is comprised of transcripts of police interviews with multiple people.
  • By the author of 6:40 to Montreal, which I also reviewed
  • Publication Date: October 6 2026 by Pamela Dorman Books/Viking
  • Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy!

What is The Paris Files About?

Something’s gone very wrong with Genevieve’s trip to Paris, and now the police are involved.

Gen, who is Canadian met American Jacob Ford in Manila. The two agreed to continue their whirlwind vacation romance in Paris. Gen rents a flat for them and all seems well, until Jacob vanishes. A panicked Gen becomes even more agitated when the police think she had something to do with it.

The narrative is comprised of police interviews with Gen, her neighbors, the landlord, and the mysterious caretaker of the apartment building where Gen and Jacob were staying.

What I Thought of The Paris Files

I don’t always love epistolary fiction, but really enjoyed this one!  The interviews were interesting and really kept me guessing.

Perfect for fans of The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley!

The Paris Files: Q and A

Do you have questions about the book? Leave me a comment and I’ll try to answer them!

Spoilers are hidden; just use the arrow to uncover them!

In The Paris Files, was Jacob real or just a figment of Gen’s imagination?

I loved this part! Yes, he was real.

Who killed Jacob in the Paris Files and why?

The big clue was the discussion of “viager.” In a viager sale, the seller keeps the right to live in the property for life (viager occupé) meaning that the seller lives in the home until their death, at which time the buyer now owns the property outright. Fatma, Gen’s landlord, sold the apartment to her neighbors, Henri and Noor. But they were getting impatient waiting for Fatma to die, so Henry sent over a poisoned cake. Because Gen and Jacob had extended their stay, Jacob ate the cake

How did Jacob in The Paris Files disappear?

When Henri realized he’d killed the wrong person, he got Rolande the caretaker to help him hide Jacob’s body. He blackmailed her as she had dementia and was worried she’d lose her job and apartment.
