Wow, I can’t believe it’s time for another Jen Streams: What I’m watching in fall 2018! I haven’t been doing much reading, so what have I been streaming? Read on and find out!
I’ve talked last week about my Blogging Slump. I’m not going to lie: the existence of streaming might be an existential threat to reading and blogging.
I’m old enough that I remember life without the internet, and tell my kids that in the Olden Days, you had to record shows on your VCR or you missed out FOREVER.
Thankfully, that is now not the case.
Okay, so what am I watching? I’m happy to report that I’m as picky a watcher as I am a reader. I do not want anything a) scary b) depressing c) creepy d) disturbing right now. So I am not watching horror or sci-fi or anything like that. Sorry.
Here are the fun, fluffy things I’ve been watching in fall 2018…
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Netflix)
I hadn’t read this because I have a thing against sibling love triangles. I didn’t love the romantic vibe of this as much as everyone else did, but LOVED Lara Jean and her family. I was also completely fascinated by the art direction. This movie was A Million Shades of Blue and Green. LJ’s room. Her house. The school. The movies. The playing field. The party. I was transfixed and I want to snap my fingers and live in an IG aesthetic.
Behold:

Love (Netflix)
I have had hit-or-miss success with Judd Apatow stuff. But I LOVED Freaks and Geeks and will always give his stuff a chance.
While the title of this is terrible and generic, I’m really enjoying it. It’s a millennial love story of sorts, with fantastic leads and great secondary characters.
It’s funny and awkward and feels like sort of a cross between Freaks and Geeks and Girls. To me it has all the best parts of Girls without the annoying parts.
The Bold Type (Freeform)
I was a fan of Sex and the City back in the day, and to me this is an updated version. Three friends working at Scarlet (a women’s magazine) in New York (think Cosmopolitan, and Joanna Coles of Cosmo and Marie Claire and Project Runway is involved behind the scenes).
My only gripe is that it is filmed in Toronto, not New York, and that’s obvious to me as a New Yorker. It pains me, tbh. And they play fast and loose with the geography, like, hey, we live in Williamsburg, let’s zip over to Central Park and go running. Yeah, probably not. Go to Prospect Park!
Okay, that is my full report so far. I’ve also been watching the new season of Riverdale but will do a separate post on that. Tell me in comments what you’re watching! If it’s fluffy I want to try it and if it’s not, I still want to hear about it!

I was wary of the Lara Jean books because of sibling love as well but I loved the direction it went it. I thought the movie did it justice, and yes – the art direction!
I binged Love a while ago and really liked it. You can definitely tell that they had to wrap it up in season three though.
Uh oh – I am about to start season three and am now worried..
I love The Bold Type. Sutton is my favorite. I can’t wait for the next season.
AHHHHH we need to talk about it. I love those girls!
I felt the same about To All the Boys. I loved it but not because of the romance. Its just a beautiful (aesthetically) movie & the family is wonderful. I felt the same about Crazy Rich Asians. I still think you should try Set it Up for a romcom though. Not perfect but hits all the right notes.
Did you watch Candy Jar yet? Another YA romcom.
I’m watching The Haunting of Hill House and it is: a) scary b) depressing c) creepy d) disturbing – so not for you lol
Karen @ For What It’s Worth
I just finished binging The Office (all 9 seasons) and I’m a little lost as to what to do with myself now. I tried the UK version but it’s just not the same. I do want to stream that new Jack Ryan series but I don’t have Amazon. :/
Enjoy!
I didn’t realize there was a color scheme, when I watched TAtBILB. This is why I miss watching things with my daughter. She always comments on design and production stuff, because she has a BFA in theatre design. That adaption was fantastic and fluffy and made me terribly happy.
To All The Boys was super cute and fun, I agree. And I loved their house haha. It was awesome, I want one lol. I’m watching Riverdale too and it’s always ridiculous and usually fun. 🙂
I’m reading To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before now. Honestly it never caught my attention before but after loving the movie I decided to give it a chance. I’m actually impressed there isn’t complaining about how different the two are. I do like Lara Jean and her family in both book and movie and although I’m not loving the book I will probably continue on. Maybe the second book will be better since there isn’t a movie yet.
I haven’t read the books! I read her first series (Summer I Turned Pretty) and wasn’t a fan of the brother love triangle romance. Not sure this author’s romance style is for me, but I really really loved the sister relationships and her family.
I loved TATBILB, but I also read and loved the book (contemporary romances are totally my jam).
I loved the first season of The Bold Type, but the second season got super political what felt like every episode and I’m just not about that in my TV shows. Hope you enjoy it though!
I agree that it did feel like they were trying really hard to be “relevant.” I didn’t have a problem with that, but the way they dealt with issues was pretty superficial. So I agree that I think they could have dialed it back, or picked fewer issues and done them more in depth.
I loved To All the Boys! I agree about the family dynamics being amazing too. I have not watched the others. I have been watching Riverdale, and I look forward to your post because um… why do I watch that show even? It’s bananas and so bad but I also can’t stop hahah. I watch pretty much zero fluffiness, as a rule. As always, I am rewatching The 100. And The Expanse, which is actually really good! OH this is probably fluffy: The Challenge! I have been watching it since the start (like, 20 years ago, no lie) and it is such ridiculous trash and I LOVE IT hahha.
