Plot Summary for Her Last Breath
This book is FULL of twists and reveals and I will do my best to keep them secret. Leave your questions in the comments – spoiler are fine!
Prologue:
Detective Layla Washington follows the progress of the rescue of a young woman trapped in a cave in the Cascade mountains, in a cave called The Devil’s Staircase. Washington needs to talk to her, as she’s part of a homicide investigation.

What are your thoughts about the question Washington asked Tess early on about it being strange that Allie didn’t bring a third person on their expedition (which was standard protocol)? That makes even less sense when we learn that Tess is behind it all! Did I miss something?
Ooh, that is a great question. I don’t think that was explained unless we both missed it. I’ll add this question to the post.
We only get Allie’s POV at the very end, so that doesn’t help. Based on Tess’s conversation with Jacob when they plan to kill Allie, I don’t think Jacob was supposed to be their third person. That’s possible, though.
My other thoughts are either a) Allie agreed to it as her boyfriend Ethan knew where they were. But she and Ethan were a bit at odds after the pregnancy, so maybe b) Tess and Allie were just going to explore the easy/open part of the cave. Then Jacob showed up in a mask and forced them further and further inside, where they planned to kill Allie.
I started getting suspicious when Washington said it’s her job to make suspects think she’s their friend so they’ll open up to her. I figured that’s what she was doing to Tess.
I thought the lack of names in Jacob’s section was glaring, but there was really no other way to hide that he was working with Tess, not Allie. Overall, it worked.
I loved it and have recommended it to several people who loved it too. He covered up the reveals as much as he could and I think it’s a great book!
i just finished the book and am stuck on the meaning of “Cecil.” When Tess asks Washington what it means, she replied, “it doesn’t matter, he wasn’t referring to you.” And I’m SO LOST. In Finnish, it means “sixth” and I just don’t understand?
Hi Holly!
Were you listening to the audio? Your question had me so confused and then I realized you meant sisu, which is the Finnish word for grit. And Washington says that because when they discussed sisu it didn’t refer to Tess. They were using the word to describe Allie’s fierce fight for survival.
Omg. I WAS!!!!! Thank you so so so so so so much!!!!!!! THIS MAKES IT ALL MAKE SENSE NOW! Wow.
Not a problem at all! When I do audiobooks there are always things I don’t quite get.
I’m happy to help anytime and if I don’t know something, my blog readers are so smart!
