Jen’s Quick Take on Parents Weekend

- Parents Weekend is a closed circle mystery involving a suspicious death and a kidnapping
- The book takes place during (surprise!) a California college parents weekend
- But a missing student overshadows the weekend festivities, followed by a shocking kidnapping. Are the two incidents connected?
- There are a lot of characters, so my list should help!
- Parents Weekend does offer plenty of suspects and motives for both incidents
- And, we get a return character from two prior Alex Finlay books: Every Last Fear (2021) and The Night Shift (2022): FBI Special Agent Sarah Keller (she’s pregnant in The Night Shift, which takes place in 2015)
- Among Finlay’s books, Parents Weekend is on the lower end of the Goodreads review scale prior to publication.
- Some readers praise the book’s fast pace and multiple suspects
- Others complained about the huge cast of characters, making most but Sarah rather underdeveloped.
- I agree with both points: this is a fun, quick thriller to read but might not be for you if you’re looking for three-dimensional characters, or a lot of thematic development.
- If you liked Finlay’s prior books, I think you’ll like Parents Weekend!
- Publication date: May 6, 2022 by St Martins Press. Thanks to the publisher for the advance review copy.

Spoilers for Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay

During Parents Weekend at Santa Clara University, a student named Natasha Belov is discovered dead. The working theory? She was trapped in a sea cave at high tide and presumably drowned.
After that, five students vanish: Libby, Stella, Mark, Felix and Blane. Their parents think they are just avoiding them (as kids will do) but begin to get worried.
