Mystery and Thriller Books about Twins

04.22.2025 by Jen Ryland // 5 Comments

It’s Gemini season and I just read a fun Thriller With Twins, so I decided to make a list of all the Mystery and Thriller Books About Twins and Doubles that I could think of. Share your favorite twin books with me!

Thriller and Mystery Books About Twins

These Mystery and Thriller Books feature literal twins:

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

This classic Dark Academia book has a sinister set of twins in a suspicious friend group. I read it years ago, and it’s long, but it’s a must read for fans of the genre. If you’d like something more current, try the next title:

Julie Chan is Dead by Liann Zhang

This book was UNHINGED. When a twin finds the body of her long lost, very successful twin, there’s just one thing to do: impersonate her. Can she do it? Should she do it? This one felt like Yellowface crossed with The Lying Game and I enjoyed it!

Her Perfect Twin by Sarah Bonner

A woman discovers photos of her twin on her husband’s phone. What’s up with that????

This twisty domestic suspense will really keep you guessing!

Here’s my Review of Her Perfect Twin!

These books feature doubles, impersonators and doppelgängers!

The Likeness by Tana French

This book is a favorite of mine. It’s not exactly a twin book, but it has callbacks to The Secret History. A police officer goes undercover in a secretive friend group, impersonating one of their group who was murdered. It’s really good!

None of This is True by Lisa Jewell

Two women meet while celebrating their birthday in the same restaurant. They’re the same age! Are they twins separated at birth? What’s going on. This book has SO many twist and turns that you’ll be amazed!

The Switch by Lily Samson

This erotic thriller is out there, involving spouse swapping and more. (I was not expecting that!) It’s not super explicit if you’re worried about that….

Check out my Review with Spoilers for The Switch

The Split by Kit Frick

A sister story told in twin narratives. Who’s telling the truth? What’s happening? This story will keep you guessing until the end.

Check out my Review of The Split.

The Only One Left by Riley Sager

This is by far my favorite Riley Sager book! It’s a dual timeline narrative about a young woman hire to care for an elderly woman accused of murdering her entire family, including her beloved sister. But this woman insists that she didn’t do it! Someone else was to blame. Who? Why? How? This book is a page-turner!

If you have favorite twin books, I’d love to hear about them!

I loved The Likeness. I keep meaning to reread it.

I’m currently reading Where You End by Abbott Kahler, which is about twins, one with amnesia.

I loved I’ll Be You by Janelle Brown. That’s probably my favorite twin book. I listened to it on audio, as I almost always do now.

I read The Likeness, and I appreciate Tana French’s talent as a writer, but in that case I had a really hard time believing that an unrelated person could look so much like someone else to fool that person’s entire friend group.

OK, I have to add that I just finished Janelle Brown’s new summer title, What Kind of Paradise, and it was fantastic!
