Spoilers for The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective and the Ending Explained
There are three murders (or attempted murders) at the Marigold Cottages:
- First victim: James Dedrick was hit over the head from behind (dead)
- Anthony is arrested for his murder, and then Mrs. B confesses to the murder
- Second victim: Lily-Ann is attacked by a masked man she thinks is her husband Piotr
- Third victim: Gregory Ibarra is hit over the head with a golf club
The MCMC solution that the MCMC gave the police:
- Piotr was in financial trouble and wanted to kill Lily-Ann before she divorced him. They had a prenup and he would only inherit her money if she died while they were married.
- Piotr’s plan was to frame Anthony for LIly-Ann’s murder
- James Dedrick came to the cottages to meet with Ybarra and discuss developing the property. James saw Piotr lurking outside the bushes. Piotr panicked and killed him.
- Ybarra witnessed the first murder and tried to blackmail Piotr, who killed Ybarra with a golf club which he brought. In the confusion he grabbed Ybarra’s club.
What really happened:
- James Dedrick saw a very drunk Sophie stumbling home to her cottage. James was going to attack Sophie, but Mrs. B hit him over the head with a knobkerrie (an African club).
- She meant to just scare him off and didn’t know he was dead until the next morning when Sophie found the body.
- Gregory Ybarra witnessed (and took a video) of the the murder
- When Anthony was arrested, Mrs. B confessed.
- Ybarra showed the murder video to Nicholas and blackmailed him into signing over the cottages to Ybarra after he inherited them from Mrs. B. (Nicholas was set to inherit in her will as he was the child her late husband had through an affair.)
- Ybarra then told Mrs. B that she would die in prison, as he was taking the video to the police.
- Anthony grabbed the golf club that Ybarra carried around to scare off dogs, and hit him over the head. Lily-Ann and Anthony smeared Ybarra’s blood on one of Piotr’s clubs and switched Ybarra’s club with Piotr’s which had his fingerprints on it.

I’ve been bingeing on a lot of mysteries lately, and this is the one I completely, thoroughly enjoyed from cover to cover. The wonderful depth of the characters, the suspense, the setting, just everything was a perfect, masterful mystery. Loved it and hope it will be a series!

I enjoyed this book. But I was confused at the end wondering which version was true. I thought maybe the second version was the play that Sophie had written. And I didn’t really wanna think that Mrs. B and Anthony were killers. But I thank you for explaining it. I enjoy your reviews!
That was my interpretation but you could be right? I am hoping more people read this book!
I know I’m late to the discussion but I’m confused on something.
Nicolas said in chapter 72-“He heard the crack of wood against James Dedrick’s skull. He could almost feel the impact in his hand as he saw the body fall. Slowly. So much more slowly than he’d imagined, almost like Dedrick was simply lying down for a nap in the hawthorn hedge.”
I thought Nicolas killed Dedrick until the end. Can someone explain this to me? Thank you. I did enjoy the book but I would have rather Piotr have killed these two people instead of Mrs. B and Anthony.

I interpreted chapter 72 as Nicholas remembering watching the video that Ybarra showed him. (The video Ybarra took of the murder and was using as blackmail.) Ybarra knew Nicolas wouldn’t want Mrs. B to go to prison.
I could be wrong, but in 72 Nicholas says he could almost feel the impact in his hand as he saw the body fall. This suggests to me that we are supposed to think Nicholas did it when it was actually a flashback to watching the video. Red herring, because it’s later revealed that it was actually Mrs. B.
