Jen’s Quick Take on The Safari

- The Safari encompasses a few very popular trends: Vacation Thrillers, Closed Circle or Locked Room Mysteries, and those rich people behaving badly Books Like Succession
- I found this book to be a particularly close match to both Succession and another popular book which might have kicked off the entire Vacation Thriller trend. I’ll discuss that below before the spoilers
- The story is told from multiple points of view from six different characters. Normally that would be an issue for me as a reader, but I thought it worked well for this story.
- Most of the characters are not particularly likable, but in these rich people stories they rarely are.
- The Safari had clever twists and reveals that I did not see coming.
- I also thought it did a good job of acknowledging the power dynamics of a rich Jewish family owning a resort in South Africa, and of the native South Africans (both Black and white) that they employ. Some readers considered that “political” but I found it pretty matter-of-fact. I don’t like preachy stories!
- I enjoyed this much more than The Chateau and The Main Character, also by the same author.
- Release date: May 22, 2025 by Atria Books. Thanks to the publisher for the advance review copy.
