I’m a Michael Connelly super-fan pleased to bring you this Readers Guide to Nightshade. Is Nightshade a series or a standalone? Is it connected to other books in the Boschverse? I’m here to share what I found and am counting on fellow fans to help me puzzle it all out. I’m excited to discuss Nightshade with you!

Spoilers for Nightshade
Jen’s Quick Take on Nightshade by Michael Connelly

- To me, Nightshade feels like a standalone novel (I’ll discuss why below)
- It has familiar Bosch tropes: a LA County police detective is sidelined to Catalina island after a beef with a colleague over a case.
- There’s a hint of Slough House from Slow Horses to the Catalina Island location, which main character Stilman once calls the “Island of Misfit Toys.”
- Stilman has a bit of Bosch’s outsider perspective, disdain for authority, and hint of mysticism. Stilman believes the investigator and the victim have a sacred bond.
- Like most later Bosch books, Nightshade had two concurrent investigations
- I enjoyed it!
- Publication date: May 20 2025 by Little Brown. Thanks so much to the publisher for the advance review copy.
Spoiler Free Thoughts on Nightshade
I enjoyed this book. It’s hard to get to know a new main character, and some people might find Stilwell a little … dry? He’s a stickler for following the case where it leads, doesn’t care about authority, and wants to do right by the victims. So he feels a little Bosch like.
Hopefully this isn’t my “new dog” theory I had about Richard Osman’s new book. But hey, an author is allowed to mix it up a bit. And Connelly has a new Mickey Haller book, The Proving Ground, coming out this fall.
Is Nightshade a Standalone or the first book in a series?
I have two reasons to think that Nightshade is a standalone, not the first book in a series. And one reason I could be wrong:

First, this Instagram post by Orion books, who must be Connelly’s European publisher, calls Nightshade a “standalone thriller” and was reposted by Connelly’s official account.
Second, Nightshade takes place on Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California.
- Population: about 4000
- Murders per year: usually none
This makes it a great place to exile Stilwell from his LA County job, but can he solve crime here forever? Yes, he could be returned to LA.
Are There Connections Between Nightshade and other Connelly Books in the Boschverse?
I only found one!
Since this book takes place on Catalina Island, I remembered one connection: Terry McCaleb.
- He was the FBI agent who worked on The Poet case.
- McCaleb retired from the police force after a heart transplant, but (plot twist) learned that his heart donor had been murdered, and was hired by her sister to solve the case.
- Then he married the sister, Graciela, and moved to Catalina Island. But this was back in the early 2000s, as Connelly has Bosch and his characters age in real time. McCaleb died in 2004 after a mixup with his heart medication. Was it murder or accidental? If you remember, please tell me in the comments.
I did not notice any crossover characters or mentions of Terry or Graciela, but if you did, tell me in comments.
The One Crossover I Found

What I did find: a mention of an event in The Waiting, Connelly’s 2024 book with Renee Ballard.
Ballard is assigned to the Open/Unsolved unit. This IS a spoiler for The Waiting, so I’m putting the rest of the post, which includes a spoiler recap for Nightshade, under protection from here.

Great, but who was the second arrest after the mayor? The one the helicopter was waiting for? I missed something?
Hi Bonnie,
I think it has to be Crane. Not sure why Stilwell is being so mysterious, but I added your question to the bottom of the post and go over all my reasoning there.
Let me know what you think as I’m not 100% sure!
Who else could the 2nd person in the helicopter be but Charles Crane? It was no mystery to me.
As a long time, die hard Michael Connelly fan, I was really disappointed in this book, and can only hope it’s a stand-alone. I couldn’t identify with Stilwell at all, or anyone else in the book at all. I couldn’t wait to finish it and move on to something.
I felt the whole book was a bit forced and just an attempt to add another character to Connelly’s ever growing lineup. I was completely happy with Just Harry Bosch.
If this turns out to be a recurring character, and another Stilwell book follows, it’ll be the first one I’ll skip reading
I thought it was a fair question!
I do agree with you on Stilwell. He reminded me of Ballard, and I find her a little closed-off. I’m very slowly warming up to her, but I’m not sure I’ll ever get there. It’s hard to top Bosch. I’m not sure what the reason is for the standalone. Maybe MC needed a break?
Michael Connelly’s website refers to a “Detective Stilwell” series. I thought that it was okay. I think all of the infighting gets old.
Ooh, interesting. Thanks for sharing. I still think Catalina Island is too small for multiple books, but so was Cabot Cove 🙂
