Readers Guide for Our Last Resort

07.07.2025 by Jen Ryland // Leave a Comment

My Readers Guide for Our Last Resort discusses this new book by Clémence Michallon, author of The Quiet Tenant. I didn’t read her debut novel (too scary) but I really enjoyed this vacation thriller with some unusual elements. What are they and will you enjoy this new July 2025 title? Let’s find out!

This post will have Jen’s Quick Take plus some short protected spoilers. This isn’t a book with a lot of character and a complicated plot!

Our Last Resort: Jen’s Quick Take

  • Our Last Resort has the ever-popular past/present narrative. This narrative is more to develop the two main characters, Gabriel and Frida and their unusual shared past.
  • I am usually not a fan of books about cults. As children Gabriel and Frida were in a cult, but this is more used as backstory for their unusual trauma bond.
  • Our Last Resort does not have lots of characters or a super-twisty plot.
  • The book has gaslighting elements as Frida, the narrator, begins to doubt herself and her understanding of events.
  • Some readers are saying that Our Last Resort is NOT as good as The Quiet Tenant. And I can’t weigh in on that. But I found this book suspenseful and interesting!
  • Publication date: July 8, 2025. Thanks to Knopf for the advance review copy.

Spoilers for Our Last Resort

I’ll answer these questions below, and if you have any others, please leave them in comments!

  • Who killed Sabrina Brennan in Our Last Resort?
  • Who killed Gabriel’s wife Annie in Our Last Resort?

Who killed Sabrina Brennan?

Gabriel finally reveals to Frida that he was having a fling with Sabrina. That’s why she and her husband are arguing … about him. So while he feels somewhat responsible, he wasn’t the murderer. William Brennan killed his wife with a rock and then hid his bloody clothes in his car. Frida was able to find them.

Who killed Annie?

Frida killed Annie to keep her quiet. After Gabriel had a nightmare and mumbled that he killed someone named Edwina, Annie found a newspaper article about the fire at the cult compound that killed someone named Edwina. She went to Frida, all upset that Gabriel might be a murderer.

The two of them went on a hike and Frida pushed Annie over a railing and into a powerful waterfall. Then she dumped all her clothes and returned her rental car.

Did Frida and Gabriel intend to kill Edwina? No, but they knew people might die in the fire. And they blamed her for facilitating Émile’s sexual assault of Frida.

What happened to Émile, the cult leader?

He was charged with tax evasion. The fire brought firefighters and fire investigators to the cult compound, somehow exposed his financial records. (That part didn’t make much sense to me. How did he make money again? Books and online seminars? That part was a bit hand-wavey unless I missed something.)
