Readers Guide to So Happy Together

Jane Starts Stealing Stuff

• Jane steals Ben’s keys, let herself into their apartment and finds a bloody knife wrapped in a Penn Tennis sweatshirt.During a visit to a comedy club, Jane steals Colin’s phone.
• Zoe catches her and says that she found really disturbing photos on Colin’s computer.  They get into his phone and see that Leigh is accusing Colin of murder.
• Ben hints to Jane that Colin has a dark side.
• Zoe invites Jane to party at Colin’s friend Sam‘s place in Tribeca.
• Colin asks Jane what she’s up to and they argue. Zoe sees and leaves the party with Jane. Zoe dyes Jane’s hair red.

Is “Leigh” Real?

• Leigh messages Zoe and wants to meet.
• Zoe is late to the meeting and Colin shows up instead. Jane asked him what he did and he says she already knows.
• Jane tells Zoe that Leigh canceled.
• Then Jane and Colin go back to Colin‘s place and sleep together.
• Jane is convinced that Colin killed Leigh.

Ben Should Stay Out of It But Doesn’t

• Ben messages Jane that he found something in Colin’s room and needs to talk to her.
• When Jane gets to the apartment Ben is dead, and Colin is holding a bloody knife.
• Colin says he didn’t do it: he walked in and found Ben like this.
• Jane tells Colin the police will blame him so they have to stage a break-in.
• Colin says that he needs Jane to be his alibi.
• Jane leaves the apartment and dumps the knife in the East River. She’s taken Colin‘s laptop so they can tell the police it was stolen and she looks into it but does not find the creepy pictures Zoe mentioned.

Zoe shows back up

• Zoe calls Jane and tells her the news about Ben.
• Jane rushes to Zoe’s apartment. Colin is there, asleep.
• Zoe mentions that he told her he was with Jane during the murder. Jane looks shocked, and Zoe assumes that Colin lied.
• They argue over whether to tell the police. Zoe wants to, but Jane convince her it’s not a good idea.

• When Jane wakes up the next day, Zoe tells her that Colin has gone home to New Jersey and that she’s rented a car to follow him. Jane tries to text Colin and warn him that they are coming, but realizes he blocked her number.
• Colin’s parents are very welcoming. Jane decides that she should trick Colin into confessing and tape the whole thing.

Jane snoops around

• While Colin and Zoe are taking a walk, Jane finds a box in Colin‘s closet with a bunch of things belonging to a girl named Leigh. Then she finds the murder photos that Zoe was talking about.
• We learned the Jane‘s father was a hunter who accidentally killed Jane‘s mother.
• Colin and Zoe come back, and Jane has to hide in the closet.
• She  texts Zoe that she’s in there and then overhears Colin telling Zoe that Jane is a creepy stalker. Colin is about to open the closet, but Zoe distracts him with sex.
• As soon as Jane has a chance, she runs out of the closet with the box jumps in the rental car and drives away. But she hits a deer.
• Of course, Zoe comes running out. They take Colin’s parents’ car into town and sit in a parking lot where Jane shows Zoe the box of photos.

Jane and Zoe continue to investigate

• Now that they know Leigh’s last name, Jane and Zoe look up an article that says her boyfriend found her found her dead in the bathtub. Though there’s lots of typos in there and everyone’s name is spelled wrong, which is highly suspicious. Also being dead in a bathtub is very Ophelia and I suspect that Zoe must have some connection to Leigh.

• Also, Jane looks very much like Leigh. hmmm
• Zoe wants to confront Colin but Jane is afraid that if they do, Colin will tell Zoe that they did not go to college together. It is very interesting that even though Leigh went to Penn Zoe never asks Jane if she knew her. And she dyed Jane’s hair red. Just like Leigh’s.

It’s time for the (art) show!

• Somehow, they get back to the city. Zoe’s art show complete with the Ophelia bathtub scene is in days. What do you know: Zoe wants to confront Colin at the art show.
• For some reason, even though his roommate just got murdered (perhaps by him) Colin shows up at this art show. Bad idea, Colin!
• When they do the whole Ophelia part, Colin leaves.
• Zoe takes Jane into a private part of the gallery, which is filled with pictures of her. There’s also a picture of a dead girl in a bathtub wearing the necklace that Zoe gave Jane.

Finally, Zoe explains:

• Leigh was her best friend. She knew something was wrong with Liz’s relationship with Colin. She’s convinced that Colin killed her even though the police thought it was suicide.
• So Zoe decided to get close to Colin and ruin his life. She was following him when she saw it. He was going out with Jane, who looked exactly like Leigh. Jane asked if Zoe wanted Colin to kill her.
• Zoe thinks Ben confronted Colin and that Colin killed him. She also knows that Jane killed her father.

(After Jane got into NYU her father had been holding her captive, but eventually she got out and shot him staging it as a suicide. Okay….)

• Zoe takes Jane to Colin, who’s tied up in some warehouse.
• Colin insists  he isn’t the one who killed Leigh. Zoe did it. He insists the “creepy pictures” were consensual and that Leigh took pills and accidentally drowned in the bathtub.
• Jane asked Colin why he broke up with her. He gives a really stupid answer, which is she wasn’t as great as Lee and she stabs him in the stomach.

What was the ending of So Happy Together?

• Colin’s body is never found.
• Zoe and Jane made sure the police find his box of creepy photos, and some stalker text that he sent Leigh. 
• Zoe goes onto direct Jane’s plays and they become a famous duo. Then one day Jane find something in Zoe‘s copy of Hamlet: Leigh died of a accidental fentanyl overdose. Zoe faked  the newspaper article with typos.
• Jane also finds Ben‘s missing phone in Zoe’s belongings, so Zoe must have killed him too. Jane thinks about it and decides that no one is perfect and puts the items back.
