  • The Wives of Hawthorne Lane is both a neighborhood suspense book AND
  • Domestic suspense as well. Those links lead to my explanation of these subgenres and book lists!
  • The Wives of Hawthorne Lane had a VERY similar format to Big Little Lies. The book begins with a murder, but we aren’t sure 1) who is dead or 2) who did it.
  • Like Big Little Lies, the narrative is comprised of multiple POVs from four women interspersed with transcripts of police interviews.
  • Readers on Goodreads were divided, with most readers enjoying the format and story, with a few others complaining about predictable reveals and dated tropes. If you’re new to domestic suspense, or really love it, then you might enjoy it more.
  • The murder takes place on Halloween night, at a big Fall Festival, making it a great Spooky Season read!
  • Publication date: September 16, 2025 by Ballantine/Bantam. Thanks so much to the publisher for the advance review copy!

Who dies on Halloween night?

Dean!

I thought it would be Colin. He’s abusive to Georgina and his children and he’s cheating.

Many characters have motives to kill Colin: Audrey (he’s threatening her); Seth (he threatens to kill Colin); Georgina (to escape from his abuse); Libby or Bill (he’s menacing their son Lucas)

Who is Audrey having an affair with?

Also not surprisingly, it’s Colin. (He was my guess due to the controlling nature of his texts.)

What is Hannah hiding?

Someone is writing Hannah threatening notes and we discover that … Hannah is Maggie. And Peter is Dean.

Maggie wanted to escape from Dean, so after the two of them had a car accident, she left Dean in the burning wreckage and fled, reinvented herself as Hannah.

But Dean survived, found Maggie/Hannah, and reinvented himself as Peter. He was the one sending the notes. Also Hannah’s real name is Melody. She had to become Maggie to escape her own abusive father.

Who Killed Dean in the woods?

A path through a wooded area

Christina. She is in the woods with a flashlight, going to meet Lucas. Dean grabs her, thinking she’s Maggie (they are both blond). Christina clobbers Dean in the head with her heavy metal flashlight, knocking him unconscious.

Hannah brings Christina home, to find Georgina beaten and bruised by Colin.

The woman go to the woods and find Dean dead. Apparently when he fell, he hit his head on a rock and died.

All the woman conspire to frame Colin for Dean’s murder.

  • Georgina tells the police that Christina told her father about the attack, and he ran off to confront her attacker.
  • Libby tells the police that “Peter” made a move on her and when she rejected him, he stormed off to the woods.
  • Audrey tells the police that she saw Colin leaving the woods with blood on his jacket and flashlight.
  • Georgina wiped Christina’s prints off the flashlight and put Colin’s prints on it while he was sleeping.
