I prefer my suspense stories more on the cerebral mystery side than the creepy psychological suspense side. Are there really readers out there who love being gaslit?
Analysis: She’s Not Sorry is Classic Psychological Suspense
Well, when I read a book like She’s Not Sorry, I understand the appeal of (fictional) gaslighting. True psychological suspense books are (to me) like a carnival fun house. Everywhere you turn, you see things that might or might not be what they seem.
I’m a control freak and thus do not really enjoy this. But sometimes it’s fun to enter that fun house and let yourself get tricked and manipulated.
She’s Not Sorry is a book that will keep you guessing. Some readers on Goodreads found it slow to get going, and I can see why they said that. A psychological suspense is NOT a fast-paced popcorn thriller, though it can have thrilling moments.
The genius of She’s Not Sorry is in the set-up. Yes, there are a lot of clues (real and red herrings) and LOTS of things that make the main character uneasy, from her mammogram to her teen daughter’s newfound independence to a weird guy lurking around her job to a string of robberies in her neighborhood.
Just when you’re thinking what does it all mean, the book makes a big reveal. What!?!?!?!?
I do love to be surprised. And I was.
