The Switch by Lily Samson: Jen’s Analysis
Adam and Elena have just moved into a posh new neighborhood (it’s a British setting and author, so I’m getting into the spirit here.)
They meet another couple who live nearby: glamorous Sophia and her husband Finn. Sophia and Elena grow closer and one day, Sophia delicately asks about the status of Elena’s marriage.
Yes, Elena is a little tired of her tyrannical mother-in-law and feeling somewhat unappreciated by her husband. Then Sophia suggests an unthinkable thing.
Before I go into that, hear me out: this is NOT my typical book
At all. BUT I was raised in the 80s on a diet of Pringles plus V.A. Andrews and Jackie Collins books with a side of Days of Our Lives and General Hospital. So I went with it!
Okay, Sophia wants Elena to swap husbands with her for the night. But not in a 1970s swinger party style (did you see the Ice Storm?). Sophia wants to do a secret switch. As in, they trade places late at night and initiate sex and their husbands won’t know.
Here’s what I think you analytical mystery readers are saying:
- What?
- How is that even possible?
- Um, are there sexual assault laws that cover this?
And to that I say:
- I know
- I know!!! It’s hard to think the husbands are that oblivious.
- Possibly?
There is some discussion around #2, including changing hairstyles, discussing waxing routines (TMI), and swapping shampoo and soap. As for the rest, you’ve got to go with it. Or not.
Then Things Go REALLY Off the Rails
What, you say? They weren’t off the rails already? Well, fasten that seatbelt, because it’s going to get wilder. Sophia has a mysterious stalker. Finn has a tragically dead sister. I don’t want to say more because those of you adventurous enough to read this will not want to be spoiled.

It is my understanding that Finn did not kill Elena in the end. He is in love with her and actually goes back and forth between living with her and visiting Sophia and his new nephew. That’s what the last chapter of the book (One Week Later – Elena) says unless I’m totally misreading it. 🤷🏼♀️
