Review with Spoilers for You are Fatally Invited

01.27.2025 by Jen Ryland // 13 Comments

My Review with Spoilers for You are Fatally Invited discusses that if you love a book with an And Then There Were None premise, this one is a perfect choice for you. There’s also a fun twist. Let’s discuss it all!

Jen’s Quick Take on You Are Fatally Invited

  • This book follows the And Then There Were None plot pretty closely.
  • It does have a fun twist though: all the guests are authors. Yes, it’s on my list of Thrillers and Suspense Books Featuring Authors.
  • It did get convoluted at times and I felt being too familiar with And Then There Were None was a bit of a spoiler for me, but it was a fun and suspenseful book!
  • To be published on February 11, 2025 by Random House. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy for review.

Their host, reclusive author J.R. Alastor, is represented by his personal assistant, Mila.

The host offers games for his/her guests to play.

Then, one by one, the authors die in ways found in their books.

Because And Then There Were None has a mastermind who fakes their death, I assumed that was the case here. My suspects were Rodrigo or Cassandra.

Cassandra was J.R. Alastor.

  • Mila wanted to kill Violet for stealing her book. They were critique partners and Violet submitted Mila’s pages under her own name. Alastor approached Mila and said he’d make Violet confess.
  • Mila had sued Violet and her publisher. Rodrigo was her lawyer but perjured himself and she lost her case.
  • Cassandra was the wife of Violet’s lawyer, who bribed Rodrigo to botch Mila’s case.
  • Cassandra then killed her own husband by putting peanut oil in his water bottle.

  • Cassandra killed Rodrigo first (as she’d promised Mila revenge)
  • Cassandra then faked her own death, making it look like someone pushed out her window and into the sea (from a scene in her book)
  • Cassandra tried to drowning Ashton because he played the prank that resulted in her daughter’s death by drowning.
  • Cassandra killed Fletch because he (as a former therapist) wrote about her grief over her daughter’s death in his memoir. Why didn’t this come up in the book?
  • Olivia helped Ashton fake his death
  • Olivia had to die because she was a serial killer and her books were based on her own murders. This confused me and if you have thoughts, please leave them in comments.
  • Cassandra hired her staff because of their crimes. I thought she also killed them. (Rebecca in comments thinks Olivia killed Taryn and Curt. I looked and Olivia blames Alastor for “manipulating” her and Violet into killing the two. What do you think? Tell me in comments!)
  • Taryn stole an old man’s nitroglycerin pills and he died on a heart attack.
  • Curt was a chef who accidentally gave a customer fatal food poisoning.

The survivors (Mila, Violet, Ashton) decide not to go to the police with the truth, as they’d have to admit their own crimes.

The press reports that Cassandra, Alastor, Fletcher, and the Sandovals died in a fire (set by Cassandra.)

Character/Profession/Sin: My GUESSES

Cassandra: Host/Mentor

Mila: Event Coordinator/Accomplice

Rodrigo: Lawyer/Perjurer

Ashton: Detective/Child Killer

Olivia: Housewife/Serial Killer

Violet: Prodigy/Thief

Fletch: Therapist/Exploiter

Curtis: Chef/Poisoner

Taryn: Housekeeper/Drug Dealer

If you have thoughts or questions please leave them in comments. Spoilers are fine!

So grateful for this rundown 🙏 As a huge fan of AC, I guessed the twist but I didn’t work out how they were all connected. Loved the final chapter in both the physical and audiobook

Alastor didn’t kill her staff, The Serial Killer does. SK kills them in order to rule them out as Alastor.

Thanks for the correction; I’m going to go back and look, and then add your comment to the post. Things got a bit crazy there at the end!

Not to mention that Olivia knew exactly how to cut Ashton’s throat so he didn’t bleed out… JS

I thought this book was OK. I agree it got a little too convoluted at times. Thanks for the spoilers. I needed more clarity.

Who narrates the voice of SK? The voice is very different from Olivia’s female narrator, Jeremy Carlisle Parker. It’s a great way to misdirect, too. But the voice is not credited. And the person has a great voice, I’d like to listen to their other audio books.

There are a bunch of narrators: Alejandro Ruiz, Dawn Harvey, Jeremy Carlisle Parker, John Lee, Will Damron, Victoria Villereal, Mia Hutchinson-Shaw and Feodor Chin. But I couldn’t find any info on who did which character!

I haven’t read the book in a while, so if this is wrong, someone correct me!

Cassandra’s husband Michael was Violet’s lawyer, representing her against Mila, who accused Violet of stealing her book. Michael bribed Rodrigo (Mila’s lawyer) to lie so that Mila lost her case. Apparently this really bothered Cassandra (who was actually Alastor.)
