New York Times 50 Best Thrillers of the 21st Century: My Take on the List

Of course, I have a few thoughts.

Here’s How the List Was Created
This isn’t a bestseller list, it’s a panel vote. According to the Times’ description of the project, they sent ballots to 291 people: novelists, editors, booksellers, librarians, critics, and avid readers. They asked each voter to select their picks for the top 10 thrillers published since 2000. I asked Ruth Ware on Threads how this worked and she said (to the best of her memory) that they sent a database of all qualifying titles, which she said was very extensive.
It’s also a direct follow-on to the Times’ 2024 project, The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. By their own account, that list didn’t include genre fiction, so they’re now creating lists by genre, starting with thrillers.
Named voters include Freida McFadden, Ruth Ware, S.A. Cosby, Gillian Flynn, Stephen King, plus hundreds more.
A Few Quibbles
First off, the 21st Century is only a quarter over!
So this list feels a little premature, no??
Then, as always, “thriller” is loosely defined. My pet peeve!
On this list, the term “thriller” covers everything from spy and espionage thrillers (Slow Horses, I Am Pilgrim, The Constant Gardener) to domestic and psychological suspense books with unreliable narrations (Gone Girl, Girl on the Train, Silent Patient, Before I Go to Sleep) to classic mysteries like The Magpie Murders, to literary fiction (The Goldfinch!)
I am willing to accept domestic suspense as thrillers but I dispute The Goldfinch as a thriller. I’ve always seen it listed as either literary fiction or coming of age.
My Other Thoughts on the List
I love that Tana French shows up four times
The Likeness is one of my favorites of all time. That’s one writer accounting for 8% of the entire ranking, which either tells you how great is or how much the voters loved her (probably both).
S.A. Cosby is in second place with three titles on the list
I think this is well-deserved. I’m a huge fan. It’s interesting that all his winning books are from the 2020s! He’s one of the defining crime writers of the decade, and he rarely misses!
No Freida McFadden, John Grisham, Lee Child, or James Patterson
Clearly this is not a bestseller list, though Dan Brown made it. To be fair, EVERYONE was reading it back in the early 00s.
No classic mysteries or cozies
Yes, the list says thrillers, but includes procedural mysteries like In the Woods and The Lincoln Lawyer. No Richard Osman, no modern Christie-style classic mysteries.
Very few series mysteries, but one series got multiple books mentioned
I just noticed The Lincoln Lawyer, The Magpie Murders, and Slow Horses … and four of Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad books. Are they a series, or just interconnected standalones?
Gender Equity (yay) and Heavy UK Representation (!)
The list includes 27 books by women and 23 by men. It also features over 15 books written by authors from the UK and Ireland (Tana French, Kate Atkinson, Mick Herron, Paula Hawkins, Sarah Waters, John le Carré, Oyinkan Braithwaite, Anthony Horowitz, Lisa Jewell, Chris Whitaker, S. J. Watson).
