SEPTEMBER 1
The Silent Appeal by Janice Hallett
What it’s about: I thought this came out in August, but I was wrong! As the Fairway Players stage their own production of an Agatha Christie play, disaster strikes the cast. Need a refresher on the goings-on in the prior , book, The Appeal? I’ve got you covered. Check out my Readers Guide to The Appeal!
Why I picked it: The Appeal is Hallett’s most comic book and I’m curious to see what this bickering amateur theatre group is up to!
The Getaway by Kieran Scott
What It’s About: A group of friends gathers in the Hamptons just as a hurricane rolls in. But he storm outside turns out to be nothing compared to the secrets coming out inside.
Why I picked it: I read Kieran Scott’s YA books back in the day. I’m curious to see what she will do with a closed circle/trapped in a storm story.
Before You Were Anne by Emiko Jean
What it’s about: Detective Chelsey Calhoun takes on the case of a murdered woman and her missing daughter.
Why I Picked It: I really enjoyed The Return of Ellie Black, also featuring Calhoun. I’ll let you know if you need to read that book to understand this one. Have you read the first book and need a recap? My Readers Guide to The Return of Ellie Black should refresh your (and my!) memory!
Cards on the Table by Lana Harper and Jilly Gagnon
What It’s About: Sisters descended from Salem witches take on an acting job that goes sideways when someone frames them for a robbery.
Why I Picked It: I like to read a few witchy titles during the Spooky Season.
SEPTEMBER 8
The Dating Game by Ally Zetterberg
What It’s About: A game designer finds herself blackmailed over a murder she actually committed.
Why I Picked It: My readers LOVE puzzle and game themed books, so I’m checking this out! It does NOT have good early reviews so my hopes are low.
Murder on the Upper East Side by Gigi Waldorf
What It’s About: A woman attends her high school reunion and walks away accused of murder.
Why I Picked It: It takes place in my neighborhood so I’ll let you know if the author gets it right. This one also has low early reviews, so we will see.
SEPTEMBER 15
We Chase Shadows (We Solve Murders 2) by Richard Osman
What It’s About: The gang from We Solve Murders is back, this time trying to figure out who left a mysterious note on a dead body. If you need a recap of book one, my Readers Guide to We Solve Murders is here!
Why I Picked It: Don’t pass this on, but I didn’t like book one. But I didn’t love book one of The Thursday Murder Club, so I thought I should give it another chance.
SEPTEMBER 22
It’s Not What You Think by Clare Mackintosh
What It’s About: A woman is sure her husband is cheating, then he turns up dead.
Why I Picked It: I really enjoy her books!
The Midnight Guests by Alex Hay
What It’s About: You’re transported to London’s most lavish hotel on its 1926 opening night, when a body turns up in luxury suite. In the present timeline, Joe, a journalist and the grandson of one of the hotel employees from the 1920s, is writing about the murder, which might put him in danger.
Why I Picked it: Early Goodreads buzz is comparing it to Knives Out. I didn’t read Hay’s first book, The Housekeepers, but many readers loved it!
SEPTEMBER 29
Tradwife by Sarah Langan
What it’s About: A journalist discovers the sinister truth behind a trad wife influencer.
Why I Picked It: I read Yesteryear and Everyone is Lying to You and I want to do a “battle of the Tradwives books” post.
Buzzy September Titles That I Am (Probably) Not Reading
Dead Beat (Ninth House 3) by Leigh Bardugo (Sept 15): Alex Stern brings her battle with demons on the Yale campus to a close.
Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel by Lucy Foley (Sept 22) A new Miss Marple mystery, this time set in the Swiss Alps. Lucy Foley taking on a beloved classic sleuth does have me curious!
The French Illusion by John Grisham (Sept 29) Someone kidnaps a couple honeymooning in France. Grisham stepping outside his usual legal-thriller lane makes this one worth a look even if you don’t normally read him.
