Best Free Rom Coms on Netflix and Amazon Prime

12.28.2020 by Jen Ryland // 6 Comments

Are you looking for a great rom com to stream for free? These are the best choices (in my opinion, of course) for The Best Free Rom Coms on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, updated in February 2023. Check out my list below!

Best Free Rom Coms on Netflix and Amazon Prime

Amazon links are affiliate and if you make a purchase I may receive a small percentage.

The Best Rom Coms on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu (Updated in 2023)

Who doesn’t like watching a rom com – you laugh, you go “aw,” and you’re left with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Here are the rules:

The movies must be romantic AND comic.

This list does NOT include Christmas movies (though I am including one comic all holidays movie). If you are looking for sweet and romantic Christmas movies, check out my list of Best and Worst Christmas Movies to Stream

Here are my picks:

Best Rom Coms on Netflix

Free with monthly membership

New Netflix Rom Coms for 2022 and 2023!

Your Place or Mine

Your Place or Mine isn’t destined to be a rom com classic, but Reese is a great rom com heroine, the movie had a house-swapping premise that reminded me a little bit of The Holiday, and there were a few funny moments. Reese was a type-A single mom, while Ashton’s character was a little more muddled.

Promotional photo for Your Place of Mine features Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher lying down hideaway.

Emily in Paris

Yes, Emily in Paris is a series, not a movie, but it has ALL the rom com hallmarks: a heroine who is adorably awkward, a sassy best friend, meet cutes, and …. Paris.

You should also check out my list of books like the show Emily in Paris!

Along for the Ride

This summery romance is based on a popular YA book by Sarah Dessen. Check out my Fun Facts About Along for The Ride post, where I compare the book and the movie, discuss filming locations, and more!

Love and Gelato

Lina wants to fulfill her late mother’s wish for her to travel to Italy. So, the summer before college, Lina takes off for Rome where she finds, love, adventure and romance.

Other Netflix Rom Coms You Can Watch

Feel the Beat

Feel the Beat was an interesting cross between Pitch Perfect and Little Miss Sunshine, about a small town Wisconsin dancer who blows a big Broadway audition and has to slink back home and coach a group of enthusiastic but untrained kids for a big dance competition. April is not the most likable heroine but the kids are beyond cute. I like my rom coms with some snark so I loved this one!

Set It Up

Set it Up is a cute rom com about two overworked assistants who decide to set up their bosses, and of course fall in love themselves.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

he adaptation of this YA book had a welcome emphasis on family and sisterhood. The messy romance wasn’t my favorite, but I still think it’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.

The Holidate

Yes, this looks like a Christmas movie, but a rom com about a couple of singles who decide to be each other’s dates for holiday events. Like a seasonal fauxmance. Surprisingly funny!

The Incredible Jessica James

An aspiring playwright decides to be “just friends” with a guy after a break-up. Mmmhmm, right. This one was laugh-out loud funny! Jessica Williams, who stars, is a comedian, so not a surprise!

Notting Hill

Notting Hill isn’t my absolute favorite (for most of the movie Julia Roberts’ aloofness translates as bitchy) but the London setting is charming and the “I’m just a girl” speech is an absolute rom com classic, making this movie worth a watch.

Best Rom Coms on Amazon Prime Video – free to Prime members

Amazon Prime Video has a shockingly low number of rom coms. Why are you so unromantic, Amazon?

They do have some rom coms that I think are absolutely terrible, like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and 27 Dresses. They want to charge us for Sweet Home Alabama and She’s the Man. Really?

New Free Amazon Rom Coms for 2022 and 2023!

Shotgun Wedding

This only gets three stars on Amazon, so I am skipping it. Let me know if you try it!

The Summer I Turned Pretty

This is a 2022 adaptation of the YA trilogy by Jenny Han, who also wrote To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The Summer I Turned Pretty is an earlier series and its love triangle (with brothers!) was a bit controversial. Curious to see how the show adapts these books!

Other Free Amazon Rom Coms to Watch

The Big Sick

Not really a classic rom com, but a sweet movie about love and dedication in the face of cultural difference and illness. Written by and starring Kumail Nanjiani from Silicon Valley!

Brittany Runs a Marathon

This isn’t quite a rom com either, more a story of a girl learning about her own self-worth and how to let people help her. But there is a very cute romance with a meet cute and, like I said, slim pickings for rom coms, so I’m throwing it in here.

What If

This one stars Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Driver and Zoe Kazan . I went in with trepidation (it’s a guy who’s turned his back on love who falls for a girl with a boyfriend) but it wasn’t bad!

Best Rom Coms on Hulu

Sign up for a free trial or pay for membership

Hulu doesn’t do an amazing job with rom coms either, but there are a few!

New Hulu Rom Coms for 2022!

Fire Island

I haven’t had a chance to watch this, but it sounds cute. It’s a diverse, LGBTQ homage to Pride and Prejudice!

Other classic rom coms on Hulu that you can watch or re-watch!

Bridget Jones Diary

You may have read the book. You may have already seen the movie, but it’s never a bad time to rewatch this one!

Working Girl

I think this was taken off Hulu, but I’m leaving it here because it’s going to be rebooted with Selena Gomez! You can watch it on Amazon for $3.99 while you wait.

This is an oldie, but it’s fun to watch for its 1980s big hair vibe. Working class girl Melanie Griffith gets a job in the big city and falls in love with Harrison Ford. I’m pretty sure Joan Cusack is in the mix too.

Love, Simon

You may have already seen this, but it’s adorable! Simon is a high schooler who’s terrified to come out and then finds he has a secret admirer. There’s also the sequel: Love, Victor.

I love Set It Up! That’s definitely one of my favourite from the list. I haven’t see Jessica Jones so that’s next 🙂 Great list!

I didn’t realize Jessica James was a rom com – or a movie (I thought it was a series) but I’ve been meaning to watch it because I like her. We were going to watch Brittany Runs a Marathon last weekend but never got to it.

I really liked Set it Up even though a lot of people didn’t. I thought it was a classic rom com. The Big Sick was good too. and true!!

You might be thinking of Jessica Jones – which is a Netflix series based on Marvel. I keep typing Jones instead of James. The Incredible Jessica James is a rom com (at least to me).
