Who doesn’t love a dreamy royal romance? A story about a regular person falling for a prince or discovering they are a princess? A book with all the pageantry of the monarchy? Because there are SO many YA books about royalty, I’m doing three separate lists: contemporary, historical, and fantasy royal romance! Here’s my YA Books About Royalty: Contemporary Romance list.

Updated in February 2024!

What I am Reading: June 2019

05.27.2019 by Jen Ryland // 5 Comments

Summer is here (or so I say) and that means summer reading! What books are on deck for me? Find out what I am reading in June 2019!

I’m excited about all these! Here’s the lowdown:

The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen- I actually finished this one and my review will be up soon. If you’re a Sarah Dessen fan like I am, I think you’ll enjoy my post!

Not Bad People by Brandy Scott – this is general fiction and … it’s long. Over 500 pages. And as an OCD sufferer, I may have issues with the premise, which is that three friends think their innocent act may have caused a tragedy. Stay tune and we will see!

Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman – this is a historical mystery. I’m a Lippman fan from way back and got back into reading her last summer with Sunburn, which I loved. Looking forward to this one!

The Whisper Network by Chandler Baker – I’ve never read any of Baker’s YA, but am excited to try this one, pitched as a read alike to Big Little Lies!

Tell me what you are reading in June 2019 in the comments!

Looking for new releases? Check these out!

Books I’m Glad I Read in 2018!

12.13.2018 by Jen Ryland // 17 Comments

So I usually do a “Best Of” list at the end of the year. But it’s been a weird year filled with troubling events and I was feeling slump besides.

So I decided to do a Books I’m Glad I Read in 2018 and I hope that you’ll tell me about book you’re glad you read (or link me to your “best of” list.)

Here goes:

Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian

Published April 2018 by Simon & Schuster

This dual narrative book about a summer ice cream stand that’s been run by young women since World War II was all about female friendship, female leadership, romance,  and ice cream. What’s not to like? You can read my full review of Stay Sweet here!

Sunburn by Laura Lippman

Published February 2018 by William Morrow

I love me a good noir story, and this one is about a girl who walks into a bar and meets a guy. Simple, right? Not really. This book is twisty and surprising – and I can be hard to surprise! Read my mini-review of Sunburn here.

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

Published in April 2018 by Simon Pulse

A cute rom-com is always something I’m up for. This book had romantic fireworks but also a lot of depth. When a girl astronomer with some anxiety ends up in the great outdoors with the cute boy next door, sparks fly and cuteness abounds. You can read my review of Starry Eyes here!

Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert

Published in August 2018 by Little, Brown.

I count on YA for good coming-of-age stories, and this was one I liked a lot.  Yvonne is a violinist who worries that she won’t make the cut at a music conservatory. She tries to connect with her father, a chef. And she agonizes between two guys – Warren, someone she’s known forever, and a street musician who understands her struggles to rekindle her love of music. A multi-dimensional story that’s moving and real.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Published by Wednesday Books in September 2018

I can’t say I “enjoyed” this book but it was a tough read that I won’t soon forget. Inspired by true-crime podcasts, Sadie is about a girl whose beloved younger sister is found dead. She goes in search of her sister’s killer, then disappears. Sadie’s story alternates with a podcast that chronicles Sadie’s last known movements. Brutal and harrowing but worth the read.

Have you read any of these? What are the books you’re glad you read in 2018!
