Jen Streams Spring 2018

03.08.2018 by Jen Ryland // 22 Comments

Not sure if you caught my fall streaming recap and my winter movie watching recap but I’m back with my spring update. There may be a part II coming… but for now, here is Jen Streams Spring 2018!

Welcome to Jen Streams Spring 2018!

Guys, the main point of this post is to tell you that you’ve got to watch Everything Sucks! on Netflix. If you loved Freaks and Geeks, if you loved Stranger Things, if you love YA  ... check this one out.

It’s an adorable show about the AV team and the drama club at an Oregon high school in the 90s teaming up to make a movie.

But it’s about so much more. Friendship, first love, being a teenager. There’s a really sweet (and far too seldom seen) f/f romance. There’s a second chance at love romance. There’s great 90s music.

My only complaint is that the episodes are really short (20 minutes) and there are only 10 of them. I was done in two days, and now I’m hoping there is a second season. Try it so there will be!

The other thing I just finished was … a bit mixed. I’d been meaning to try it as I’m a fan of some of the actors. It’s Friends from College, also on Netflix.

There were some funny moments (the wedding episode) but all in all I was sort of horrified that a bunch of 40 year-old Harvard graduates were so narcissistic and amoral.

I mention the show only because there was a hilarious (to me) subplot that has one character, an award-winning literary author, decide to write a YA book when his career stalls. Kate McKinnon from SNL has a weird cameo as Shawna, a wildly successful YA author who gives him advice (like that YA books are for teenage girls looking for books for “bathtub time.”) Eventually he comes up with some terrible-sounding werewolf plot that I wanted to tell him not to bother with at all.

Some other things I’m thinking of trying: Jessica Jones Season 2 (I’m really not a superhero fan but I did like season 1) and Altered Carbon (also not big on sci-fi but people seem to like this one).

What are you watching? Please tell me about it in comments!

Friends from College was one I was going to try and then I heard a lot of not great things. I heard they were pretty condescending on the YA stuff too. I like a lot of the actors in it as well and might still try it at some point.

They were very condescending about YA but nothing we haven’t heard before – “YA is for children and people who don’t want to grow up… blah blah…” Meanwhile these characters were the MOST immature 40 year olds ever so … yeah. There were some truly funny moments though. Maybe try a couple episodes and if you do, tell me so we can discuss!

I was addicted to Jessica Jones in the beginning, but towards the end, I think the last two episodes, I started getting a little bored so I just stopped. I always meant to restart it, but then Luke Cage, Iron Fist, the Defenders, etc. came out and I felt so behind and discouraged. Now JJ season 2 is out — argh! I don’t know when I’ll finally get around to watching it, probably in the summer time when my network shows are on hiatus. I LOVED the OA, one of the best Netflix shows in my opinion, but they’re taking forever to release season 2. Have you watched the OA?

I have not seen the OA. Will check it out. I liked Jessica Jones well enough but don’t feel that compelled to watch the second season for some reason. It’s really dark!

Ooh I’ll definitely try Everything Sucks! Looks fun.

I’m looking forward to starting Jessica Jones (maybe tonight) but Altered Carbon was just okay for me.

Good to know it’s awesome 🙂 I tried to watch FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE, but yeah…. it was like, how did these people go to such a smart school when they are SO DUMB!!!

They were ridiculous. Not a good advertisement for Harvard at all!

I agree with you about Friends from College. I watched the first two episodes because of Keegan Michael Key but it was just sooo cringe-worthy.

Love him and he is really good in the show, though his character is a hot mess.

Haven’t been watching anything good on Netflix, so glad to hear about this one. My son is obsessed with Haters Back Off which was funny for about 30 seconds.

I just started Everything Sucks this week and so far I’m loving it! Episodes are short though which is a bummer.

That is the only bad part of the show in my opinion. It feels like the episodes are over in about 10 minutes!!
