I’m seeing lots of Mother Daughter Thriller Books lately! Do you love books about mother daughter relationships AND love suspense and thrillers? The mother-daughter relationship seems to be a growing trend in the mystery and thriller lane and am here to talk about it! Updated for 2026!

Mother Daughter Thrillers and Mysteries

Family relationships are often a huge part of suspense books, especially in subgenres like domestic suspense. But I’m seeing more mother-daughter relationships front and center in the mysteries and suspense books I read. From loving to toxic mother-daughter relationships, these books use this bond to deepen character development and suspense!
Caller Unknown by Gillian McAllister

Simone flies from the UK to enjoy a mother-daughter trip in Texas before her daughter Lucy heads to university. But when Lucy vanishes from their rented vacation home, Simone panics. When she receives a ransom, she is resolute: she’ll do anything to get Lucy back.

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell (2025)

Yes, this is a story about a toxic manipulator, but it’s also a strong mother daughter story, as the main character’s daughter is the only one who sees that this guy is BAD NEWS.

You Belong Here (2025)

A mom drops her daughter off for college. But she has dark secrets from her time on campus, so when her daughter vanishes, it’s time for a reckoning!
My Readers Guide to You Belong Here by Megan Miranda
Claire Darling by Callie Cazumi (2025)

Claire Darling is a psychological thriller with a mother daughter component. It focuses on a very dysfunctional relationship between main character Claire and her mother.

Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight (2024)

This book, which I just finished, inspired this post. Like Mother Like Daughter is a fast paced suspense book about a mom who suddenly goes missing and her college-aged daughter who is determined to find her. Like many mother and daughter pairs on this list, these two are at odds. And like all the moms in this book list, Katrina has way more secrets than the average mom!
Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanan (2023)
Gone Tonight definitely had some similiaries to Pieces of Her, but I think focused even more on the mother-daughter relationship. Check it out if you haven’t tried it yet!

Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney (2023)

While Alice Feeney’s books are usually (always?) focused on toxic relationship of one sort or other, Good Bad Girl was focused entirely on motherhood in a way that I found really interesting. While it’s different from her other books and is one of her lower rated, I enjoyed it and think it would make great book club discussion material!
The Long Way Back by Nicole Baart (2023)

The Long Way Back borders on women’s fiction but definitely has suspense elements. It’s about a modern day “Gilmore Girls” mother daughter pair who travel around as influencers. But then their (seemingly) incredibly close bond shatters as the daughter vanishes.
My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon (2023)

I don’t usually read horror, but My Darling Girl ended up being sort of horror lite, and also explores a three generation mother daughter relationship. The main character has had a VERY rocky relationship with her mother and they are estranged. But when her mother has only months to live, the daughter agrees to take her in. BIG mistake!
Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda (2024)

Megan Miranda’s suspense fiction often deals with family relationships, but this book specifically focuses on a daughter still grappling with the fact that her mother ran off and left her. Or did she? This slow burn suspense takes some time to get going, but really comes together at the end!

Before She Finds Me by Heather Chavez (2023)

Another high stakes thriller about a mother with big secrets, this book is about a seemingly normal mom who is about to drop her daughter off at college when a very dramatic incident exposes the secrets she’s been keeping. I really enjoyed this female-forward thriller!

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter (2018)

I discussed the Netflix adaptation of Pieces of Her in a Page to Screen post. Both streaming show and book are good (and different) versions of a grown daughter who realizes her mom has been keeping BIG secrets from her.

This horror novel seems like a bit of a retelling of the Bad Seed. And the author released a follow up in August 2024.

If you were transfixed by the Gypsy Rose Blanchard story, this book is for you! Rose Gold has many health issues, but no one can figure out what’s wrong with her….

Along the same lines as mothers and daughters is a book involving a mother-in-law. One of my favorite books is, The Mother-In-Law by Sally Hepworth
Oh, I LOVE that idea! So many people have recommended that book to me and I have not read it. But I’m going to do that and see if I can think of other mother-in-law suspense to add…
