My Readers Guide for Dissection of a Murder discusses how much I love a suspenseful courtroom face-off. This one is good: a mentor and mentee who are also husband and wife. This book had some interesting elements that may divide reader opinion, so let’s talk about it!

Rough Timeline of Events in Dissection of a Murder
My Questions and Yours!

Jen’s Quick Take on Dissection of a Murder
- Dissection of a Murder takes place in Durham, a city that is northeast of Liverpool and Manchester.
- The case involves the murder of a judge by the doorman of a members only men’s club.
- Leila Reynolds Kesler represents the defendant, while her husband Julian Kesler, her colleague and former “pupil supervisor,” is the prosecutor representing the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service).
- Dissection of a Murder is twisty and surprising.
- The narrative is (for the most part) a dual first person POV with timeline shifts. Quite a bit of information is withheld from the reader, making this more in the suspense lane. But I didn’t mind that. I’ll discuss more in the spoiler section below.

Plot Summary for Dissection of a Murder and the Ending Explained

The story is mainly told from Leila’s POV with occasional chapters narrated by Witness X, an anonymous person who claims to have committed the murder.
Prologue: The Accused
Accused of killing Anton Smythe, a judge. Yes, they did it. But they had to.
Part One: The Arrest

Leila is at an office party in chambers. She’s thrilled that she just got a commendation for her work. Jim shows her an indictment in the murder of Anton Smythe. She’s been assigned to the case. The accused, Jack Millman asked for her, as she represented him before in an assault case. She will be facing off against her husband.
Leila talks to her husband, Julian. He tells her there will probably be a plea. They discuss that the murder happened at an elite men’s club, and that the accused is the doorman.

I really enjoyed this book. Perfect blend of legal/procedural and twisty/sexy thriller. The author was skilled at managing the timelines, points of view and backstories. That could have been a hot mess. I am hoping she continues her fiction career and am looking forward to this on screen! If you don’t already have a list of courtroom thrillers, please make one for us!
I agree – it was a really fun book. I do have a legal thriller post here but the most similar books I can think of off the top of my head are:
1) The Perfect Marriage/The Perfect Divorce by Jeneva Rose. Particularly the second, but they are connected.
2) Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Robert Dugoni (book two of the Keira Duggan series)
3) Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow (dated, but the OG. And the Apple TV series was an interesting adaptation.)
