My thoughts on The Last Time We Saw Her by Jaclyn Goldis, which include protected spoilers and questions. Is this friend group suspense story set in the Azores for you?

Jen’s Quick Take on The Last Time We Saw Her by Jaclyn Goldis

Trope guide to The Last Time We Saw Her, with a friendship bracelet and the cover of the book
  • My favorite book by Jaclyn Goldis is still The Safari, which I think checks so many reader boxes: wedding mystery, White Lotus vibes, and Succession vibes
  • For me, The Last Time We Saw Her falls into the friendship thriller bucket. A group of former teen campers gathers after ten years to remember their missing friend, a girl who vanished on a Jewish heritage trip to the Azores.
  • The Last Time We Saw Her is of fans of There Should Have Been Eight, In My Dreams I Hold a Knife and even I Have Some Questions for You.
  • There’s also a podcast/documentary angle that isn’t a huge part of the plot.
  • The book has a past/present timeline and lots of POVs, making it harder to follow at times. If the audiobook doesn’t have a full cast, you might get confused, so drop your questions in the comments!
  • Publication date: June 16, 2026 by Atria/Emily Bestler. Thanks so much to them for my advance copy!

As they are supposedly remembering Syd and filming a documentary, Reuben is almost killed in a canyoning accident after someone cuts his rope. Then he ends up getting drowned in a hot spring.

Motives (according to the book) for Sydney’s murder

  • Jules was jealous of Syd’s flirtation with Aiden (which was not allowed as he was a counselor)
  • Lexa had a crush on Eli and Syd was with him
  • Eli loved Syd and she was secretly hooking up with Aiden
Who killed Syd?

It was Cass, which I know my readers will not be happy with. She was only eleven! Also Liv apparently witnessed some of this but thought it was just a nightmare, etc. Liv helped Cass throw Syd’s body off the cliff.

Who was blackmailing Lexa?

First Reuben, and then Cass took over. Lexa was trying to buy the paperwork that explained that Jules’ family, not Eli’s was the heir to the da Costa fortune.

Why did Cass kill Syd?

Isaac Azulay was not just Liv and Syd’s father, he was actually Reuben and Cass’s too (with Daniella). Isaac had two families: one in the US and one in the Azores. When Syd took Reuben’s backpack and he ended up with hers, Reuben saw a photo of her father, who was also his father. XX had promised Daniella he’d leave his other family and be with hers, but then Sydney’s kidney disease flared up and he reneged.

Who killed Reuben?

We are made to think Lexa was the one who cut his rope while he was canyoning, but Cass put her fingerprints on the rope knife. Cass was the one who pushed Reuben into the hot springs during an argument.

What was the identity switching stuff?

I got a little confused but Eli’s family inherited it, but Eli’s great great grandfather switched identities with someone in Jules’s family. Jules is the true heiress.

What happened to Lexa?

David, Eli’s father, asked her to pay off the blackmailed and get the papers that proved Jules was entitled to the de Costa fortune. But Lexa was shot by Cass and dies

What happened to Liv?

During Cass’s rampage at the end, Liv falls, suffers a head injury and is put into a coma. Then Cass comes and tries to kill Liv by injecting air into her IV, but Isaac (who has realizes she’s a deranged killer) stops her.

What if Reuben and Syd had fallen in love at camp, not knowing they were half-siblings?

Fortunately the book does not go there!!
