Jen’s Quick Take on The Girls Before

- I’ve read both of Kate Alice Marshall’s adult suspense books: No One Can Know and A Killing Cold. So when I started The Girls Before, I thought that maybe she was moving into procedural mysteries.
- The Girls Before is more of an amateur detective story with Marshall’s usual Family Secrets and drama.
- The main character is a high school guidance counselor and search and rescue volunteer who, on a search for a toddler, sees something that brings to mind her long missing best friend.
- The story is an interesting remix on the popular “missing best friend” trope
- Content advisory: there is also the POV of a kidnapped (and abusd) girl
