Readers Guide to Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh
This guide will have Jen’s Quick (and spoiler-free) Take on Fifty Fifty, an explanation of why I REALLY wish this series of books was being reissued in order, and my thoughts, plus spoilers for the ending of Fifty Fifty.
Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh: Jen’s Quick Take

- Fifty Fifty is a legal thriller: a twisty story about two sisters accused of murdering their father
- Each sister swears she didn’t do it and the other one did. But who is lying?
- Sort of a locked room mystery too, as all three (sisters and father) were the only ones present at the crime scene.
- This is book five in the Eddie Flynn series. Strangely, book eight, Witness 8, was released this spring and had huge spoilers for Fifty Fifty. So if you plan to read both books, READ THIS FIRST.
- To be published on June 3, 2026 by Atria Books. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.
- Readers advisory for scenes of self harm (nonsuicidal self-injury disorder).
Quick Synopsis for Fifty Fifty
Fifty Fifty shows that sometimes, a simple and pithy premise is all you need!
- In October 2018, former NYC mayor Frank Avellino is stabbed to death in his Tribeca townhouse. (There is something really funny about this location, so scroll down to the end to find out.)
- His two daughters, Alexandra and Sofia, are present, and each calls 911.
- In their 911 calls, each sister accuses the other of the crime.
- Eddie Flynn is hired to represent Sofia Avellino as her public defender. He’s assisted by Harper, his investigator.
- The law firm of Levy, Bernard and Groff is hired to represent Alexandra Avellino. Junior associate Kate Brooks is part of her legal team.
- Frank Avellino’s lawyer, Mike Modine, is murdered by one of the sisters, narrated in a killer POV. This is to cover the fact that Frank planned to change his will.

What is 152 Franklin Street?
This address is an actual Tribeca building which is divided into apartments.

But seems like Steve Cavanagh is a Swiftie or has a sense of humor. The scene of the crime in Fifty Fifty is 152 Franklin (the first photo on the left) which is a real Tribeca apartment building.
It’s also directly across the street from Taylor Swift’s townhouse (and the building where she owns two apartments, one one the second floor that she connected to the townhouse, and a penthouse.
