Review of 10 Things I Hate About Pinky
I absolutely loved 10 Things I Hate About Pinky – it was my favorite of the Dimple and Rishi series and I’m adding it to my Best Books of Summer 2020 list!
This book had its sale date moved during spring corona lockdown but DO NOT miss out – it makes a perfect summer read!! Not only is it set during the summer in a charming small Cape Cod town, it’s an adorable rom com that successfully blends hate-to-love with a fauxmance. (I know! Both!)
Free spirited girl and serious guy is a trope that (for me) can veer into manic pixie dream girl territory, but this book managed it perfectly by giving the characters enough psychological depth and growth.
Pinky’s constantly at odds with her straitlaced lawyer mom. She’s given up trying to please her. So she can’t believe she’s a) spending the summer with her parents and b) asking boring Samir (the exact kind of guy her mother would pick out for her) to be her fake boyfriend. Samir has a secret crush on exuberant, outspoken Pinky and can’t believe she’s inviting him to spend the summer with her either.
These two were beyond adorable as they figured out they were in love with each other. I also appreciated that the book didn’t just use strict parents as a plot device, but delved into the psychology of the tense relationship between Pinky and her mom. A subplot about a butterfly garden earmarked for destruction deftly incorporated issues of class in a small town that swells with affluent summer residents during vacation season and fit in perfectly with Pinky’s passion for activism.
Highly recommend 10 Things I Hate About Pinky as a great summer read!
