Review of Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson
I really enjoyed this author’s last book, Eight Perfect Murders, which featured a bookseller and was an homage to classic mystery novels. Every Vow You Break was a bit different. I went in expecting one kind of story, and got something I didn’t expect!
Abigail’s new husband Bruce seems completely perfect: rich and reliable. And yet, Abigail does have a one night stand at her bachelorette party, so maybe she’s not quite as in love as she seems. She goes through with the wedding, and she and Bruce head off on their honeymoon to a remote island off the coast of Maine. Bruce is one of the investors in the resort there and is excited to show Abigail around. But she thinks the island is odd in a way she just can’t put her finger on. Then (as the synopsis reveals) her one-night-stand shows up. Uh-oh!

I don’t want to give too much away, but I did find some of the twists predictable (perhaps because I’ve read a lot of newlyweds on a spooky island books recently – check out my full list here.)
I did like Abigail as a character and enjoyed watching her try to figure out the island’s mysteries.
For me, the end got a little weird and out-there, but overall this was a gripping, suspenseful story with a lot of atmosphere.

Our book club just read this thriller and I can’t find discussion questions online. Can you provide any help?
Hi Allison. I posted a few questions in my discussion post/spoiler review for the book, which I linked here. But beware of the spoilers!
Totally agree with you about the ending. Also, I found there were way too many preposterous incidents. I rated this the lowest of all the PS’s books I’ve read.
Thank you Lisa for leaving a comment! Yeah, this book got a little too weird for me at the end!
