Review of His & Hers by Alice Feeney

His & Hers was a dark, twisty, crazy ride.
First off, His & Hers was much darker and more disturbing than a typical psychological suspense novel, bordering on horror at times.
I’m putting a very general trigger warning at the bottom of this review and if you want to know all the details, check out my spoiler review and plot summary of His & Hers here.
Anna Andrews reminded me a bit of Rachel from The Girl on the Train. After a personal tragedy, she’s hitting the bottle hard. She hides her drinking well, but when she loses her temporary BBC presenting job (she was replacing a colleague on maternity leave) and goes back to being a correspondent, she spirals a little.
Fortunately, there’s a murder she can report on, a murder of someone she actually knew. And that Jack, her ex-husband, also knew … intimately. Jack will be the police investigator assigned to the case. (All of this is a complete conflict of interest, of course, but I just went with it.)
Then one murder turns into more and Anna and Jack become trapped by their lies, trapped in this village surrounded by creepy woods, and trapped in their sad memories of their broken marriage.
Anna, Jack, and the murderer, who in the audiobook uses a voice changer, narrate the book. This makes the audiobook a really good choice – the two readers did a great job.
I guessed the murderer early on, but then changed my mind. Does that still count?
That said, His & Hers is a seriously twisty book that REALLY keeps you guessing. There were SO many suspects. In addition, the characters ranged from mildly unlikeable to completely horrifying. Finally, Anna’s drinking makes her unreliable in a way that kept things feeling just a little off-balance. Just when you think you’ve decided what’s happening, there’s another twist or revelation making you question what you thought.
Definitely recommend this if you don’t mind a pretty dark book (this was almost too dark for me in parts) and love a lot of twists.
If you’ve read His & Hers and want to talk spoilers (or are nervous and want a plot summary come on over to my His & Hers spoiler review and discussion.

TW: if you are sensitive to depictions of bullying, predatory/abusive relationships, sexual assault, or animal abuse, tread carefully with His & Hers . Anna also repeatedly mocks someone with a speech impediment (which the narrator does in the audio. Awkward!)
