The Housemaid is Watching: Jen’s Quick Take

- Though Freida McFadden’s books are generally suspense, this one feels more like Domestic Suspense to me
- Takes place 17 years after the original book, which the author admits is a bit of timeline manipulation
- It was fun to see Millie and Enzo again and some of the crossover characters and Easter eggs were fun
- Follows McFadden’s usual formula: plot-driven, minimal characters and worldbuilding, and a couple of big reveals at the end
- Part three in The Housemaid series, which includes:
- The Housemaid (2022)
- The Housemaid’s Secret (2023)
- Also by this author (and reviewed by me:)
- The Coworker
- The Teacher
- The Intruder
The Housemaid is Watching: Jen’s Review and Analysis
Books that save all the excitement for the end are never my favorite, but when an author (or a book) is tremendously popular, I clearly need to check it out!
My take? Freida McFadden writes books that are very readable. They are streamlined, with only a few characters and not much description. They are the perfect books for audiobook multitasking or just a “quick and fun” read, as her fans describe them.
The Housemaid is Watching is book THREE in a series, so you might want to either 1) read the first two books, or read my reviews with spoilers so you have an idea of what has gone on before.
- In short, former housemaid Millie Calloway is now Millie Calloway Accardi, after marrying hunky landscaper Enzo Accardi.
- The happy couple has been married for eleven years and have two kids, daughter Ada and son Nicholas (Nico).
- They’ve just moved into their dream house on Long Island
- In the prologue, someone has just found a dead body.

What I Liked About The Housemaid is Watching
Laid back Enzo and suspicious Millie make a fun combination. Married eleven years, they are thrilled to be moving into a beautiful new home ON Long Island (the on is a book joke.)
It was fun to see Millie have to worry about things like getting her kids to the school bus on time.
A character from The Housemaid AND a character from The Housemaid’s Secret make appearances in this book, which I enjoyed.
Things I Liked Less About the Housemaid is Watching
Like most domestic suspense books, the Housemaid books require some suspension of disbelief. As you’ll see if you read the book or the spoilers below, there’s an aspect of the story that we all complained about in this book from last summer.
Because there is a very limited number of characters, there were only a few viable suspects for the murder that we are shown in the prologue.
Also, because the book is so streamlined, you know anything out of the ordinary that is mentioned will have something to do with the story.
Finally, the plot consists of a lot of misdirection and then two big reveals at the end, one of which is pretty out-there.

I don’t think Millie still thinks Nico is a psycho after finding out what was going on with Jonathan. (Doesn’t he need some therapy??? Ada too, probably)
I thought we would find out a reason for Janice being such a nut.
That is true – those poor kids! I think Janice’s behavior was because of the boy that was kidnapped.
You’re probably right! Yes, she was over the top but it’s not unheard of. I knew something was going on with Nico and I found it hard to believe that Millie didn’t see it…but life with kids is hectic so it’s not too crazy that she didn’t.
No – I completely agree with you! The way Janice was described made her seem a bit off, like Dawn in the Co-worker. And lol that Millie thought poor Enzo was up to something. He puts up with a lot for sure.
