My Review with Spoilers of The Wilds discusses that IF you have joined me on the journey of The Sanatorium, I am happy to report that with this book, we are done. But what did I think of this third installment in the Elin Warner series? Should you read it or just read my spoilers for The Wilds? Let’s find out!
The Wilds by Sarah Pearse: Overview
- Published on July 16, 2024 by Pamela Dornan
- Book three in the Elin Warner series, which started with The Sanatorium
- Other book by Sarah Pearse: The Sanatorium (2020), and The Retreat (2022)
The Wilds by Sarah Pearse: Jen’s Quick Take
- Takes the story outside the UK to Portugal
- It’s a past-present dual narrative book that shifts between Elin in 2021 and a missing woman named Kier in 2018
- A Goodreads ad called it a “propulsive thriller.” No, it’s more suspense.
- I’m curious how The Wilds will read to someone who hasn’t read the first two books. It’s NOT a standalone as it does really build on the first two installments
Review of The Wilds by Sarah Pearse
I defended Detective Elin Warner against all of you who read The Sanatorium (a Reese’s Book Club Pick) and were all annoyed by her. I didn’t mind Elin, but I felt the book fell apart a bit at the end.
Then came book two, The Retreat. Yes, I snarkily said that it was very similar to the first book. And it was, though it deepened the mystery of Elin’s stalker. Who was following her in book one and leaving her angry notes in book two.
What did I think of The Wilds?
The Wilds definitely felt different from the first two books.
- It left the UK and took us to the Parque Nacional in northern Portugal ( I assume it’s Peneda-Gerês National Park.)
- The Wilds had a past/present narrative that alternated between the POVs of Elin and a woman who went missing, along with her van, from the National Park. (Yes, this feels a bit Gabby Petito inspired, right?)
- The story also focused on trauma and grief and the healing power of nature, which I found interesting.
But the big question for many of us is: did it answer all the questions raised in books one and two AND were those answers worth the wait?
I’m not sure I can say yes. If you have abandoned our journey together with Elin and just want answers, I have them below!
