Wild Dark Shore: Jen’s Quick Take

  • NEW Reese’s Book Club Pick for November 2025
  • Wild Dark Shore is NOT technically a mystery
  • But it does have many of the characteristics of psychological suspense: unreliable characters, gaslighting, and an overall sense of uncertainly and unease. Think Shutter Island, but written with a naturalist’s eye and a philosophical bent.
  • Wild Dark Shore has a fascinating setting: a remote and isolated island between Tasmania and Antarctica. Rich in wildlife and history, it’s been the home of a group of researchers studying the flora and fauna of the island. One of their tasks is to manage the world’s largest seed bank.
  • One day a woman washes ashore and is rescued by the father and his three children who live there. She is looking for her missing husband. Where is he????

I’d love to know what you thought of Wild Dark Shore and that ending! Scroll down and leave me a comment!

Where was HANK??

Rowan’s husband Hank was being held captive in an underground storage room by Dominic and his children.

Hank groomed and slept with Fen, Dominic’s teenage daughter. When she fell pregnant and told Hank, he freaked out, sabotaged the island’s communications system, and then tried to drown Fen in the ocean.

Fen was rescued by her brother Raff. Then Dominic put Hank in the underground room, which had an air shaft (and a ladder) leading to the ground level. The plan was to keep him there until the supply ship arrived in two months.

But Rowan, Hank’s wife, arrived in a very dramatic fashion (after a boat wreck) and found Hank.

She also eventually figured out what her husband did to Fen. So she left him where down there while she figured out what to do. (More on what happens next below.)

What Happened to Dominic’s wife Claire in Wild Dark Shore?

A person's hands cradling their large pregnant stomach.

When Claire was pregnant with Orly, she learned she had cancerous tumors (perhaps in her uterus; if the book said exactly I missed it.)

She was advised to terminate the pregnancy and treat her cancer, but she wasn’t willing to do that.

It sounded to me that the doctors let her pregnancy progress to the point that her baby could survive, then did a caesarean section that tried to avoid disturbing the tumors.

Claire ended up dying in surgery. (The book is a bit vague on the details but Dominic is traumatized because he was her medical proxy.)

What Happened to Alex, Tom, and Naija in Wild Dark Shore?

A skull and bones lying on the ground

Alex was one of the researchers, and the man whose grave Rowan digs up, thinking it’s Hank.

Alex and Raff fell in love. He wanted to have an overnight romantic liaison with Raff, so he (against his brother Tom’s advice) took Raff to spend the night in a cabin that was not being used as it was at risk of washing away. There was a big storm and Tom and his girlfriend Naija came to evacuate Alex and Raff.

Alex and Raff were able to get to safety in their zodiac, but Alex turned to check on Tom and saw Tom and Naija get swept away by the ocean.

After that, a guilty Alex took his own life by hanging himself.

What Was the Ending of Wild Dark Shore?

Tunnel with light at the end

After discovering her missing husband Hank in an underground storage area, Rowan thought she could leave him there for two weeks, when the supply boat is expected.

This storage area can be accessed through an underground tunnel, but there is also a glass-paneled escape hatch at ground level.

But the island starts to flood faster than expected. Rowan is hesitant to let Hank out, but she also doesn’t want to be part of his death. So she tells Dominic that she can’t be part of killing Hank.

Meanwhile, Orly decides to rescue his former friend Hank from drowning. He opens the door and Hank tricks him into climbing down the ladder into the room. Now Orly is trapped and Hank is out.

Dominic and Rowan both prepare to rescue Orly. Dominic starts trying to get an on-ground hatch open.

Rowan wades through the tunnel, where she finds Orly in Hank’s former prison room.

Meanwhile, a freed Hank goes looking for Fen. He lunges at her, sending them both into the ocean.

A wave sweeps Hank away.

Fen is able to hold her breath until her brother Raff comes to her aid and saves her.

In the underground room, Rowan and Orly are waiting for Dominic to open the escape hatch. Rowan coaches Orly on holding his breath, and then when the water starts to rise, holds him up into the remaining air pocket.

As the water rises more, Rowan is worried that Orly will swallow water and die, so she seals his mouth with hers and gives him the last breath in her body.

Dominic pulls them both out. Orly is alive but Rowan has died.

Dom, Raff, Orly and Fen finally leave Shearwater Island.
