This Summer I’m Feeling Stuck!

07.18.2019 by Jen Ryland // 15 Comments

Hey, long time no see!

Summer is usually a time when I’m super-busy, reading and looking forward to a trip.

This summer has been a little different. I went on a couple short trips in the spring and will do another one in the fall, but this summer I am (yay?) staying put in New York. (And at the moment, sweltering.)

THIS SUMMER I’M FEELING STUCK

I’ve also been feeling a little off balance lately. I struggle with anxiety and mine has been bad. Someone close to our family died very unexpectedly, and I’m struggling with that. Summer is also the anniversary of something very difficult for me personally, and I had that to contend with. I think it’s just been a lot at once. There’s nothing really wrong with me specifically, but I think that also makes me feel guilty. Why can’t I get it together??

I find in these situations that it’s good for me to get back into a routine and feeling at least semi-productive. Accountability! So I’m going to try to get back into a reading and blogging routine, get back on Instagram and Twitter. I always feel better when I get to talk to my blogging and reading friends.

How is your summer going? If it’s great, I’d love to hear about it. If you have funny, romantic, escapist books you’ve read and loved, please tell me about them! If you have tips for me about how to get out of a general life slump – please, fill me in!

A while back I wrote a Mood Read post about what to read when you’re anxious and I think I need to go check that out!

Mood Reads: What to Read When Anxious

04.23.2018 by Jen Ryland // 18 Comments

Welcome to Mood Reads, a new feature in which I choose books based on my (or your) mood. Today’s installment will discuss What to read when anxious…

Based on some stuff going on around me, I’ve been anxious and on edge, and I can see that this mood could last a couple weeks more . While I wait this stressful time out, I’ve also been doing some spring cleaning – my closets (which I discussed last week) and some painting and minor projects. (I find that cleaning and organizational projects are soothing. Also HGTV.)

But what should I be reading? I’ve been distracted and have had a hard time finding books lately. I’m going to make a list of what I usually read when anxious and then you can tell me about your mood reads in comments!

What To Read When Anxious

YA: Any Sarah Dessen Book – I find that (most of) her books have just the right amount of romance, plot, and humor. Her characters are often going through stuff too, so I don’t feel so alone.

Romances. I went through a particularly difficult period in the 90s where I read nothing but romance. I don’t always require happily ever afters, but in some moods, I do. Regency romances are a particular favorite when I’m anxious. Not sure why, but there you go.

Re-reading in general can be a really good thing for anxiety – a favorite book is like a tried and true friend and has no unpleasant surprises.

Talk to me in comments! Need a mood read of your own? Have suggestions for what to read when anxious? I’m all ears!
