Jen’s Analysis: The Next Mrs. Parrish is a perfect beach read
I actually tried The Last Mrs. Parrish on audiobook when it came out and ended up DNF’ing it. I’m not a great book listener, and the story took a while to get going. When I tried it in print, I liked it a lot better.
But I did really enjoy The Next Mrs. Parrish, which I think is a perfect beach read. It’s a twisty story of four people trying to get the better of one another.
There’s rich, controlling Jackson Parrish. His ex-wife Daphne Parrish, who is older and wiser in this book and has no intention of letting her husband gaslight or control her. There’s Amber Patterson Parrish, Jackson’s current wife, who has been standing by her man as he served time for wire fraud and money laundering. And there’s new character Daisy Ann Briscoe, a Dallas jewelry designer who has a deep hatred of Amber and wants to see her get what she deserves.
I’ve seen some complaints lately about thrillers and suspense books with a cast of unlikeable characters. The Next Mrs. Parrish is more a battle of the honorable characters against the shady ones, which is a fun dynamic.
As I said above, this installment ups the pace, with short chapters and three POVs that let the reader see all the scheming behind the scenes.
Highly recommended for fans of books like The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson or Look Closer by David Ellis
I realize these books also remind me of Revenge, the 2010s ABC TV series which I’ve been rewatching this summer.
