I didn’t even know what Crime Reads was. Who are they and what are the Crime Reads Best Psychological Thrillers of 2024? Let’s find out!
Crime Reads Best Psychological Thrillers of 2024
As I discuss in my Master Post of Best of Mystery and Thriller Lists of 2024, Crime Reads is affiliated with Lit Hub and has a LOT of individual lists by subgenre, including:
- Historical Mysteries
- Horror
- Espionage Fiction, and more.
I decided to focus on their Best Psychological Thrillers, because psychological suspense and thrillers are very popular and, because they are perceived as commercial, be overlooked.
My take on their list? Too many books about socialites and influencers. And many books about two characters locked in a mind war.
Their take: “this year’s best psychological thrillers show the merging of political and personal that has become a hallmark of the genre’s revival, as private concerns become ever-more publicly policed, while public goods have become privatized for profit.” What?
What Happened to Nina by Dervla McTiernan (4.10 Goodreads)
- This book is coming up a lot and I’m super excited to try it. It’s about the family of a missing woman who decide to take matters into their own hands when her husband stonewalls the investigation.
The Most Famous Girl in the World Iman Hariri Kia (3.33 Goodreads)
- two main characters: a journalist and a socialite grifter
You Will Never Be Me by Jesse Q. Sutanto (3.68 Goodreads)
- Two main characters, who are rival writers
While We Were Burning by Sara Koffi (3.24 Goodreads)
- Two main characters, a white woman and her Black personal assistant. This sounds a little like Little Fires Everywhere.
The Many Lies of Veronica Hawkins by Kristina Perez (3.52 Goodreads)
- Two main characters, an expat socialite and her new friend
The Snap by Elizabeth Staple (3.62 Goodreads)
- The main character works in media relations for an imaginary NFL team. I’m picturing her as Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso.
Bodies to Die For by Lori Brand (3.77 Goodreads)
- Two main characters, a fitness influencer and a woman trying to lose weight.
Madwoman by Chelsea Bieker (3.73 Goodreads)
- I read this and it was interesting but odd, like a modern Yellow Wallpaper.
The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak (3.66 Goodreads)
- lol what is this book doing on here as it doesn’t seem to fit. It reads like a Harlan Coben thriller and there’s not much of a psychologial element.
Such a Bad Influence by Olivia Muenter (3.45 Goodreads)
- A missing influencer.
