Glass Dome (April 2025)

  • A criminology expert who studies child abduction is thrown into a tailspin as her young neighbor vanishes, forcing her to confront a terrible event in her past.
  • Good for fans of dark psychological thrillers and those who love stories about serial offenders
  • CHILLING and dark, with a graphic scene of serious self harm and some disturbing abduction scenes.
  • Based on a book? NO, but the series was written by famous Swedish crime author Camilla Läckberg (you might know her from the Patrik Hedström series, the Fjällbacka series, or the standalone book The Golden Cage, which I reviewed).
  • Fans of Nordic Noir should check out my complete list of Nordic streaming titles!

Breakthrough (January 2025)

  • Based on a book? YES, on the book Genom-Brottet by journalist Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjölund. It does not look like this book has been translated to English.
  • Perfect for True Crime fans. I really enjoyed it!

Åre Murders (February 2025)

  • This gripping Swedish drama is set in a small ski town
  • Hanna, a Stockholm police officer who has been suspended from her job, is at her sister’s ski cabin and helps the shorthanded local police with the investigation into a missing teen
  • Based on book? YES, on a series by Viveca Sten.
  • Perfect for fans of small town police procedurals and Nordic Noir!

  • Poker Face is a 1970s-style episodic mystery show
  • The series follows Charlie Cale, a Las Vegas casino worker with a sketchy past who is on the run
  • As she flees trouble, she solves cases along the way
  • Based on a book: NO
  • Season 2 streaming now on Peacock

The Secrets We Keep (May 15 2025)

  • The Secrets We Keep takes place in an upscale suburb of Copenhagen. When a neighbor’s au pair goes mysteriously missing, a woman and her own nanny decide to investigate.
  • Six episodes streaming now on Netflix.
  • Just finished this and it reminded me a lot of Big Little Lies.
  • But based on a book? NO
  • Perfect for fans of Nordic Noir!

Murderbot (May 16- July 11, 2025)

  • Based on a book? YES. Described as comic science fiction, Murderbot isBased on Martha Wells’ bestselling book series The Murderbot Diaries.
  • Murderbot is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients.
  • Episodes will be released weekly over several months.
  • Streaming now on Apple TV.

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2  (May 22 2025)

  • Based on a book? YES. An adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2018 book about a group of people at a wellness center
  • Even though I’m a Moriarty fan, this book was not for me, so I did not watch season one. But if you did and liked it, I hope you enjoy!
  • Season 2 is streaming now on Hulu

Sirens (May 22 2025)

  • Meghann Fahey (The Bold Type, White Lotus) tries to rescue her sister from a giant Nantucket compound where she works for Julianne Moore.
  • So, this isn’t really a mystery or thriller. Just mild suspense. Think White Lotus. Given the setting, it’s also a good fit for fans of The Perfect Couple.
  • Five episodes streaming now on Netflix
  • Based on a book? NO
  • If you watched this, tell me what you thought in comments. Weird ending, right?

The Better Sister (May 29 2025)

  • Two estranged sisters, one the current wife of a guy and one his ex-wife, have to band together when he turns up dead.
  • Good for fans of classic domestic suspense, but with a courtroom drama element.
  • Based on book? YES, a 2019 book by Alafair Burke. Check out my post on The Better Sister plot and spoilers.
  • Eight episodes. Streaming NOW on Prime Video
  • I’m watching this now and it’s pretty true to the book. People on my social media are finding it slow, but I’m enjoying it. Jessica Biel as the buttoned up younger sister and Elizabeth Banks as the unhinged older one are very entertaining.
  • It’s possible eight episodes is too many!

Department Q (May 29 2025)

  • Based on a book? YES, Department Q is a dark procedural mystery based on the book series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. 
  • Carl, a former top-rated detective who is wracked with guilt following an attack that left his partner paralyzed and another policeman dead. On his return to work, Carl is assigned to a cold case that will consume his life.
  • Starring Matthew Goode from Downton Abbey and the Good wife!
  • Nine episodes streaming NOW on Netflix!
  • I’m watching this now. It’s dark and creepy, has a Slow Horses vibe, and I’m enjoying it!
  • If you liked Department Q, definitely try The Glass Dome (above)!

Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival (June 1 2025)

  • A collection of classic Hitchcock films will be available to stream in the US, including Vertigo, Rear Window, Frenzy, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Family Plot, The Birds and more.
  • For Hitchcock fans and those who have always wanted the chance to become one
  • Streaming on Netflix beginning June 1 2025.

The Survivors (June 6 2025)

  • A young father and his wife and child visits the Tasmanian town where he grew up. But returning home dredges up old secrets and might put him and others in danger.
  • For fans of small town secrets
  • Based on a book? YES, a 2021 suspense novel by Jane Harper
  • Six episodes streaming on Netflix NOW!
  • Check out my Spoiler Discussion for The Survivors!
  • I think this is very true to the book and really made it come to life for me. The characters and their relationships are a bit confusing, so read my character list in post above – the spoilers are at the end so you’re safe!

Echo Valley (June 13 2025)

  • Julianne Moore trains horses at her farm
  • One day her young adult daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney) arrives covered in blood with a dead body in her car.
  • Variety calls this thriller “well cast but frequently illogical.”
  • Written by the creator of Mare of Easttown
  • Claire, suffering from addiction disorder, often begs her parents for money and manipulates them. Is she really in trouble or is this just another con.
  • A one-episode film streaming on Apple TV June 13
  • Rolling Stone panned this, comparing it to a Lifetime TV movie (ouch!) but if you already have Apple TV, try it and give me your take!

We Were Liars (June 18 2025)

  • The rich, enigmatic Sinclair family vacations on their private island. But there’s one summer that daughter Cady struggles to remember. What happened? This twisty tale will keep you guessing.
  • Based on a book? YES, the 2014 YA novel We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
  • Eight episodes, all streaming on Prime Video starting June 18

The Waterfront (June 19 2025)

  • Based on a book? NO. This family drama was written by Kevin Williamson (the creator of Scream, Dawson’s Creek) and sounds loosely inspired by the Murdaugh family
  • If you want to compare fact and fiction, watch The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, on Netflix
  • Eight episodes. Streaming on Netflix now.
  • I’m watching it. It’s a bit soapy and it does have an Outer Banks/Dawson vibe. So far I’m enjoying it. If you liked Bloodline on Netflix I’d definitely try this, and vice versa!

  • Part of Michael Connelly’s Boschverse, this show centers around Renée Ballard, who is in The Late Show, Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours and Desert Star.
  • Nine episodes. On his website Connelly says the series will be based on Desert Star but so was Bosch Legacy 3.
  • Streaming on Prime Video July 9

Untamed (July 17)

  • If you love reading CJ. Box books or watching Yellowstone, you should try this murder mystery set in Yosemite National Park.
  • An investigator for the national park service, assisted by a rookie ranger who’s from the city and brings some city smarts, look into a murder.

  • Will stream on Netflix starting July 17

I Know What You Did Last Summer (in theaters July 18)

  • I Know What You Did Last Summer is a classic 1970s teen book by Lois Duncan, last adapted in 1997, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Philippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr. This version is streaming on Netflix if you want to compare and contrast.
  • This updated version will be shown in theaters in July 2025!
  • Based on a book: YES; the classic YA novel by Lois Duncan

  • Based on the 2021 novel by May Cobb

Hostage (August 21, 2025, Netflix)

  • A new political thriller coming your way from Netflix. If you loved Borgen, The Diplomat, or Black Doves, get ready for Hostage!
  • If you’re a fan of British TV, you’ll recognize Suranne Jones from Dr. Foster and Scott and Bailey (if you haven’t seen those, check them out while you’re waiting for this!
  • Based on a book? NO but if you like political thrillers, check out my list of Books Like Black Doves on Netflix!

New Summer 2025 Mystery and Thriller Series Based on Books

Ballard on Prime Video (July 9)

  • Based on the Renée Ballard Books by Michael Connelly
  • Police procedural set in California and based (according to Connelly’s website) on Desert Star, book five in the Bosch/Ballard Series. Since Bosch Legacy Season Three used elements of Desert Star (the Gallagher family case) and that Ballard made a cameo appearance in that season, it seems like Ballard it will directly segue into a pairing of Ballard and Bosch.

Marlow Murder Club Season 2 (August 2025)

  • Based on the book by Robert Thorogood, this series follows three women who investigate a series of murders in the town of Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
  • The women include Judith, a retired archeologist, Suzie, a dog walker, and Becks, a vicar’s wife.
  • Season 2 is out in the UK but will air in the US on PBS on August 24, 2025.

The Hunting Wives on Netflix, a new book to movie adaptation for Summer 2025

The Hunting Wives (July 2025)

  • Based on the 2021 novel by May Cobb, this spicy Southern-set thriller features a fish-out-of-water Northerner who is taken into a group of wild wives
  • Eight episodes on Netflix now!

The Åre Murders (Netflix Streaming now)

  • Based on the Åre Murders series by author Viveca Sten.
  • Follows a familiar Nordic Noir trope: the big city resident returns to their small town to face secrets and murder.

  • Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries
  • A science fiction comedy, Murderbot is a Security Unit (SecUnit) a robot programmed to protect its assigned humans.
  • But the “Murderbot” played by Alexander Skarsgård, managed to hack itself out of its orders.
  • I loved The Terminator and hope to try this one.
