Readers Guide for Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Jen’s Quick Take

- Atmosphere had SO many elements we all love about Reid’s books: a woman in a man’s world, unrequited love, a redemption story, struggles between a career and a personal life.
- I did feel Atmosphere had a lot smushed into 332 pages. Just describing all the NASA thingamajigs was a lot. Then you had the trajectory of the space program, the romance, and the crisis moment (reminiscent of Apollo 13 if you watched that 1995 movie).
- I might like this more on the screen, where I think all these elements might blend more seamlessly and the romance would be even more furtive.
- I did find Atmosphere both gripping and moving.
- But Carrie Soto is Back remains my favorite TJR book. What’s yours? Tell me in comments?
- Oh, also I found NO references to the fictional TJR universe. Did I miss something??? Where is Mick Riva (hahaha!)
If you loved this book, check out the new documentary on 1980s astronaut Sally Ride (on Youtube and Hulu). A graduate of Stanford, Ride was one of NASA’s first women astronauts. On June 18, 1983, she first lifted off as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
After leaving NASA, she advocated for STEM education. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 at the age of 61. She hid the fact that she was gay until her obituary identified tennis player Tam O’Shaughnessy as her partner of 27 years.
