Review of The Summer House Murder

My review of The Summer House Murder, a new spring suspense story, includes Jen’s Quick Take, a review, and a few spoilers (under protection.)

Jen’s Quick Take on The Summer House Murder

  • Three married sisters. Four kids. One shared summer house. One dead body. One cheating husband.
  • For me, this had a bit of a slow start, but my interest increased and I thought by the end, I was fully engaged!
  • For me, this is more of a summer read so keep it in mind for that porch/pool/beach book list
  • Publication date: April 7, 2026 by Crooked Lane Books. Thanks so much to them for the advance reader copy!

My Review of The Summer House Murder

Three sisters gather at their shared family vacation house near Lake George.

Esme is the perfect one, with her successful husband Greg and their two kids, Grady and Brielle.

Regina is the free spirit, there with her spendthrift husband, Bryce, and their young daughter Lana.

Piper is a new mom, there with her husband Preston. She seems to be suffering from postpartum mental health issues. Or is someone gaslighting her?

When a body of a young woman turns up, who is she, who killed her and why?

I found Piper the most interesting character, as it was hard to tell if she was a reliable narrator or not. Esme and Regina were sort of sterotypical opposites.

What was fun about the book was trying to figure out everyone’s secrets and what they were up to. Again, for me this would be a great beach read. It wasn’t too deep, but twisty and fun.

Spoilers for The Summer House

The body was of Brigit, Esme’s nanny.

Greg, who was sleeping with Brigit, was the prime suspect.

But the real villain was Alexis, their half-sister/cousin (their mom’s sister slept with their father). Alexis got Brigit hired and paid her to sleep with Greg.

Alexis believed that she was cheated out of her rightful inheritance, as she was the child of their father.

To tie up her loose ends, Alexis gets Brigit into a boat and strangled her.

For some reason (revenge, I guess?) Alexis also wanted to kidnap Lara, Regina’s daughter. But Piper saved her, and in the struggle she believes that Alexis drowned.

Greg is arrested and tried for Brigit’s murder. Due to the expenses of his trial, they are now living at the lake house.

Piper and Paul move to town and open a restaurant.

Alexis marries Ben, a town police officer, and the two of them buy a lot in front of the sisters’ house and build a huge house that will block their view.
