My Review with Spoilers for Nothing Ever Happens Here discusses that this book felt very different from the author’s prior books. What is this big change and will you like it? This post contains Spoilers and then Ending Explained for Nothing Ever Happens Here, plus a helpful character list. I’m here to break it all down for you, so let’s discuss it!

Jen’s Quick Take on Nothing Ever Happens Here

- I’ve read and reviewed two books by Seraphina Nova Glass, The Vanishing Hour and The Vacancy in Room 10. I also included On a Quiet Street on my list of Neighborhood Thrillers.
- Glass’s prior books have fallen more in the suspense lane, which I’ll discuss more below. But Nothing Ever Happens Here is a bit more of an amateur detective story with some comic elements mixed in.
- I enjoyed this and I’m putting it on my list of Books Like Only Murders in the Building. If that is your thing OR you love this popular series, this could be a great pick for you.
- Nothing Ever Happens Here releases February 11, 2025 by Grayson House Books. Thanks to the publisher for my advance copy for review.
Review With Spoilers for Nothing Ever Happens Here
Nothing Ever Happens Here starts with a shocking act of violence at the Firefly Cafe in the small town of Rivers Crossing, Minnesota.
To me, this felt in line with Seraphina Nova Glass’s other books, which ranged from upscale neighborhood suspense (On a Quiet Street) to a dark suspense story about revenge (The Vanishing Hour) to a slow burn thriller set in a motel (The Vacancy in Room 10.)
Glass’s books typically feature a somewhat confined setting, multiple points of view, and a dark, creepy tone.
Until this book.
Nothing Ever Happens Here felt more like The Thursday Murder Club
- the elderly residents of the Oleander Terrace retirement community play a major role in the book
- the book has a darkly comic tone that felt a little different than Glass’s other books

Also, hi!!! It’s been so long! I hope you’re doing well, and I’m glad to see you’re still blogging.

I seem to be having trouble logging in, which I wanted to do to see spoilers. I’ve tried on two separate days now, and both times I’ve been told that my password is incorrect (when I know that it isn’t) and end up getting locked out from trying. I tried to reset my password but never got the confirmation link to reset. Any suggestions?
Hi AbyssaLibrarian!
I am so sorry to hear that and would love to try to help. I was able to troubleshoot for another reader. Are you trying to log into Grow, as that is how to get in. Were you able to log in before? You can also use Facebook or Google to log in to Grow if that is easier.

If none of that works, let me know!
I listened to this book and missed what happened to Leo??
Hi!
It was pretty confusing. Evan (the one who killed Bernie and Otis) claimed that Leo had a heart attack when Evan kidnapped him and put him in his trunk. Mack believes him, but Florence seems skeptical. I don’t remember anything about an autopsy or a police investigation. But because the gang decides to go vigilante on Evan, it didn’t seem like anything really got investigated.
Let me know if that helps!
I’m wondering why Shelby’s phone was in officer Riley’s couch? Thanks for any thoughts for my question.
Hi Tricia,
Ooh good question. I’m going to have to look and get back to you on that!
Thanks!!!
Sorry – I hadn’t read the book in a while and all I remembered was the whole thing about Leo’s phone.
I went back and looked and in chapter 28, after Shelby wakes up after having been kidnapped by Evan, she thinks, “I realize, suddenly, all of this has been him … Him stealing my phone, putting the cameras in Clay’s truck … All the attacks. This can’t be happening.”
Shelby clearly thinks that Evan did it. (I couldn’t find confirmation of this, but it does make sense. It would have been easy for him to take it when he was working at Oleander’s).
But WHY does Evan take the phone and how does it end up in Riley’s basement, hidden in couch cushions? In chapter 14, when the phone is still missing, the gang heads to Riley’s house to interview him for their podcast. That’s when Herb finds Shelby’s phone. Evan is there too, so that could have been when he hid the phone in the couch cushions.
But why did Evan take the phone in the first place? My best guess is that it was part of his messing with Shelby, due to his weird obsession with her. When he cut the power to her house, he would have known she didn’t have her phone for light or to call for help.
Did he want the phone to be found? Maybe he just needed a place to ditch it?
Those are all my thoughts, with the only actual confirmation being Shelby’s opinion that Evan took the phone.
I added this question to the main post and see if anyone has thoughts.
Thank you! That makes sense.
