Review of Nosy Neighbors by Freya Sampson
I wasn’t familiar with Freya Sampson’s first book, but I LOVE a good Neighborhood Thriller so was excited to try it.
The story takes place in Shelley House, a mansion built in 1891 as part of a “Poet’s Row” of houses that was heavily bombed during WWII. Shelley House felt almost like a character in this story. It survived the war, converted to flats in the 1960s, and has now seen better days.
The story has two narrators: Dorothy, a very long-time resident and Kit, a pink-haired Gen Z who seems to be hiding something. Also, Kit is a new (unapproved) subtenant, which annoys rule-follower Dorothy greatly. (She drinks a lot of tea and notes down the neighbors’ infractions. I related to both the tea and her annoyance with inconsiderate neighbors but I do NOT keep a notebook, for the record.)
When the Shelley House residents receive eviction notices, they begin to organize against their landlord. When a mystery attacker goes after one of their own, this bonds them even more.
Nosy Neighbors is for readers who love the leisurely pace and heartwarming small-town feel of a cozy mystery. Yes, there is suspense and danger, but nothing too scary or graphic.
The “mystery” in the book while not incredibly intricate, had a heart-breaking element and is mostly tackled by intrepid amateur detectives Kit, described above, and Will, a reporter for the local newspaper.
This book (and it seems Sampson’s other books) feels heavily focused on characters trying to right wrongs. This advocacy then makes friends out of strangers, which is a nice theme in this divisive world!
