My Readers Guide and Spoilers for Broken Country discusses this buzzy spring 2025 book club title which was just announced as the March 2025 Reese’s Book Club pick! While it’s not a traditional mystery, Broken Country IS suspenseful and I think could appeal to mystery and historical fiction readers who want something a little different. I’ll give you my quick take and then include spoilers and a book club discussion questions for Broken Country.

Jen’s Quick Take on Broken Country

- While not exactly a traditional mystery, the first sentence of Broken Country is: “the farmer is dead, he is dead and all anyone wants to know is who killed him.”
- A dual timeline book, Broken Country is set in the English countryside in 1955 and 1968 and emphasizes class differences, sexuality and gender during the 1950s and 60s.
- It’s also a VERY dramatic love story (love triangle)
- I thought it had a lot of suspense and plenty of twists and turns, as you don’t know who killed whom and why until the end of the book.
- Perfect for readers who crave a juicy page-turner with a lot of drama! It was compared to The Paper Palace and I think this is a fair comparison.
- Published on March 4 by Simon & Schuster. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy

Spoiler Free Mini Review of Broken Country
I don’t always read “book club books” but Broken Country offered a mystery of sorts. I also found it a very readable book, one that I found hard to put down.
While I figured out some of the reveals, there was still a lot about Broken Country that surprised me.
Strangely, I didn’t relate to Beth, the main character, as much as I thought I would. Beth is a country girl who dreams of studying literature at Oxford, but I struggled to connect with some of her choices. This was the 1950s and 1960s, so that might have played a part.
There was a LOT of drama in the book, but I didn’t mind that at all. I enjoyed it, and found the dramatic ending right out of a movie. (Hmmm … is Reese going to make that happen??)
