In my master post on Domestic Suspense, I said that the subgenre is pretty heteronormative. Marriage equality means spouse stealing in domestic fiction should be equal opportunity! Andrea Bartz tried to make the domestic suspense throuple happen in The Spare Room, but it didn’t really take.
Furthermore, is begging someone not to steal your man a little …. retro? Don’t worry – Beyoncé is taking no prisoners. Similarly, the characters in these domestic suspense books are anything but domestic doormats.
Because in a twisty Domestic Suspense novel, anything can happen…
Here’s my Best Domestic Supense Book list. All these books have main characters who feel like someone is trying to steal their man!
Count My Lies by Sophie Stava (2025)
This brand-new title (and GMA March 2025 Book Club pick) feels like an homage to The Last Mrs. Parrish as a young woman gets a little bit obsessed with the stylish Brooklyn couple in her neighborhood.

The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine (2017)
The Last Mrs. Parrish is about mousy Amber, who Single White Females her way into the life of Jackson Parrish and his seemingly perfect wife, Daphne. Will Amber succeed in stealing Daphne’s man? You’ll have to read the book to find out (my Review of The Last Mrs. Parrish is here).
The book also has a sequel: The Next Mrs. Parrish, which had ever more twists and turns!
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden (2022)
Some readers think that The Housemaid has a very similar plot to The Last Mrs. Parrish, but I’d argue that most domestic suspense novels share a Gothic plot structure (along with Verity, below). You know, young woman comes into a huge mansion to serve as a governess/companion/assistant of a hot and brooding guy who sometimes has a wife (see Jane Eyre). Or a former wife who is a huge psychic presence (see Rebecca.)

Verity by Colleen Hoover (2018)
Verity takes the Gothic tropes and turns them into a WILD fictional ride. This book is filled with bizarre happenings and shocking twists. And scenes that are spicy for some suspense and thriller readers, so be warned. It’s throuple-adjacent!

The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth (2021)
It’s a tale as old as time. An attractive sixty-ish man trades in his wife for a younger woman.
In this case, she’s the age of his daughters, who are NOT happy about the situation. Family drama ensues.

The Wife Stalker by Liv Constantine (2020)
The Wife Stalker has a lot to discuss. Joanna watches helplessly as the man she loves falls for Piper, an attractive new woman in town.
Can’t Leo see that Piper has a shady past? Can Joanna stop this from happening? What is happening?

I read The Last Ms. Parrish a while ago and because I read so many domestic thrillers during that period, I actually forgot the book’s name. Thanks for the reminder. And P.S., I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Loved Verity as well. Didnt recover from the book for a while and couldn’t read any other books for fear they wouldn’t be THAT GOOD.
I don’t know why I can’t get into The Housemaid though. I’ve tried and tried. I’ll give it another try though.

The funny thing about The Housemaid is that even though many people call her books thrillers, I think it’s pretty slow burn. (I thought the same about the Last Mrs. P.) But I enjoyed them both.
