Review of The Senator’s Wife
A golden couple faced off against an attractive woman flirting with the husband and a manipulative home health aide who likes to make smoothies? Reading the description, I thought this seemed like The Last Mrs. Parrish mixed with The Wife Stalker.
But that wasn’t quite the case.
Main character Sloane was a bit too perfect for my taste: rich, beautiful, philanthropic, and much beloved by everyone the First Lady of the United States to her adult daughter. But she was tragically widowed and her health issues did make her a lot more sympathetic.
After the very unexpected death of her husband, Sloane marries a senator. She’s excited to be a newlywed again. All that’s standing in her way is her upcoming surgery.
Sloane’s new husband hires a home health aide who seems to be up to something. Can Sloane save herself? Is she imagining it all? Can her meddling former mother-in-law Rosemary (loved Rosemary!) help save her?
There was a lot to like about The Senator’s Wife. I love a good (fictional!) gaslighting story.
As Sloane was a newlywed, The Senator’s Wife also had a few aspects that reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
The suspense in this was well-done, building steadily to a point where I thought, “hmmm…. is this really happening?”
The twists in this weren’t as shocking as those in The Wife Stalker. The plot was a prologue about Sloane’s first husband (something I wished had been better integrated into the story), then Sloane feeling someone is out to get her. The end got a little info-dumpy.
But all in all, this was a quick and enjoyable domestic suspense book that is a good addition to a beach bag or carry-on bag. (Yes, we are almost to summer!)
What Else Has Liv Constantine Written?
The sister writing team (love it!) of Lynne and Valerie Constantine has written an assortment of domestic thrillers. The Last Mrs. Parrish (2017) was their debut book and a Reese’s Book Club pick. They followed that with The Last Time I Saw You (2019), The Wife Stalker (2020), and finally, The Stranger in the Mirror (2021).
