Jen Watches: May and June 2019!

06.17.2019 by Jen Ryland // 4 Comments

Welcome to Jen Watches: May and June 2019!

When I was growing up, summer meant watching re-runs or renting movies at Blockbuster. Now there are SO many choices, which makes me happy as I plan my summer viewing! Here’s what I watched, what I quit watching, and what I want to watch this summer. In comments, tell me what you’re up to!

What I’ve Just Watched:

Riverdale Season 3 finale: In May, I watched the last few episodes of season 3. I’ve had very mixed feelings about this season, but I thought that the season improved a lot by the last few episodes and ended on an intriguing note. Not sure how many more seasons this show has left in it, but I’m definitely checking out season 4! Find my other thoughts on Riverdale here.

Currently Watching:

Big Little Lies: The second season just started and … we’ll see. Loving Meryl Streep, but if the whole season turns into an I Know What You Did Last Summer situation and nothing more, I’m less enthralled. We shall see! Edited to add: watched episode 2 last night and …. eh. Still not sure why they didn’t go to the police since the death last season was clearly an accident. And now that all their other secrets are out, wondering what is left to happen. Still loving Meryl!!

Gave Up On:

Murder Mystery: Wow, this was such a huge disappointment. I loved the Agatha Christie-sounding vibe of this movie about an American couple drawn into a murder mystery during their European vacation. Jennifer’s a hairdresser who loves reading cozy mysteries. Adam is a (slightly) bumbling police officer. My family read the uniformly bad reviews aloud to me and questioned my sanity but I still made them try it. Me at ten minutes in: “Guys, it might get better.” 20 minutes in: family intervention and we quit watching.

Dead to Me: I love Linda Cardellini and was really impressed by Christina Applegate’s performance, but I guessed the main twist about ten minutes into the first episode. (The person I was watching with was like “really?” I have a reputation in my family as someone who ruins everything by guessing the plot points. It’s all that reading!) Not sure if I’ll continue with this. Has anyone watched it all?

Movies I’ve Seen in May and June:

Rocketman: My husband has long mocked my love of Elton John and to him I say:

While I could have done with a little less of Elton’s childhood, more of his adulthood and a slightly clearer timeline, overall I loved this. The music was fabulous, Taron Egerton was amazing, and the Elton-Bernie story is a bromance for the ages. Highly recommend!

Book Smart: a plot about two high school overachievers who decide to cut loose the night before graduation? A crazy happened-in-one-night plot? Yes, please! Really enjoyed this!

Planning to Watch:

Veronica Mars! I’m the hugest VM fan so I will probably have to get a Hulu subscription to watch this starting July 26 . I’m pretty excited!

Stranger Things! Season 3! I hope it’s good. I’ll watch it anyway.

Tell me what you’re watching! I really could use one or two more shows to round out my summer viewing!

What Have I Been Reading, Watching and Generally Up to?

04.01.2019 by Jen Ryland // 6 Comments

And what was up with those wacky blog links?

Happy April! Apologies for the quiet around here, and then in the midst of quiet … there was drama! Here’s the scoop!

I took an actual vacation earlier in March that included a complete internet and social media vacation. It was great, but shortly after I got back, a couple people messaged and emailed me (thanks for that!) to let me know that my links were leading to another website. WTF?

I had no idea how to solve the problem, and since I do all my web stuff on my own, I didn’t have anyone to ask. I started with my host, BlueHost, who tried to extort me out of $600. Not cool.

With a little research and the help of my amazing theme designer, Studio Press, I figured out the problem: while I was away, some of my WordPress plug-ins needed to be updated. Of course, one of those – Social Warfare – had some kind of coding flaw that allowed hackers to redirect users’ websites to their own site. Problem solved for FREE. (And I really recommend the Wordfence free plug in if you want extra security.)

What Else Have I Been Up To?

I’ve been struggling to find YA I feel like reading, but I found a few great books recently: Rayne and Delilah’s Midnite Matinee was so much fun. Girls With Sharp Sticks felt like old school YA in the best way. And I’m finishing up You’d Be Mine by Erin Hahn, which is the angsty romance I didn’t even know I needed right now!

My TV watching has had a Fraudster/Sociopath theme – I watched American Crime Story: The Versace Murder (on Netflix), Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (Netflix) and The Inventor (HBO). They were all good and it was sort of striking how much the three central figures of each show had in common. I now have a mental checklist for spotting sociopaths!

Tell me what you’ve been up to – I’m trying to get back on Instagram so be watching for new posts. Hopefully!
