Coram House had one of my favorite tropes: the journalist solves a cold case.

Julie Chan is Dead is good, wacky fun. I love a good twin identity swap story!

When She Was Gone by Sara Foster

I love books set in Australia (as I lived in Sydney for almost a year) so I wanted to read this.

And…. I read The Last Session and had some VERY mixed feelings. Sadly, I think the low Goodreads rating feels fair to me.

Heartwood by Amity Gaige

Just finished this one and loved it! I’d call it literary suspense. It’s about a hiker who goes missing from the Appalachian trail.

Grab this one ASAP if you loved God of the Woods! And it was just announced as Jenna’s Book Club Pick for April!

Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping by Jesse Q. Sutanto

This is the sequel to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers!

It featured scams on the elderly, influencer culture, and people trafficked to run scams on others. I’m still finding these a little cozy for my personal taste, but Vera has now assembled quite the Scooby gang to help her and she does make me smile!

Senseless by Ronald Malfi

The Death of Us by Abigail Dean

Shattering New Literary Mystery for April 2025. The cover of The Death of Us with a red line running through it.

Wow! I would not call this a thriller, more of victim-centered crime fiction. It’s a sad and interesting look at the impact of trauma and packs a real emotional punch.

Coram House by Bailey Seybolt

Coram House is very atmospheric, has true crime vibes and is keeping me hooked. It reminds me of a Tana French or Gillian Flynn book!

How to Seal Your Own Fate by Kristen Perrin

This is the sequel to How to Solve Your Own Murder. I wasn’t the biggest fan of that book, but decided to give the series one more shot. If you liked book one, let me know in the comments.

My take: it’s super similar to book one, with an identical structure. It’s really more of a sequel, so be sure you’ve read How to Solve Your Own Murder first.

Julie Chan is Dead by Liann Zhang

A comic thriller about twins. I just finished it and it feels a little like Yellowface, with identity stealing, a skewering of influencers (instead of publishing) and a crazy plot. I’d say Julie Chan leans toward horror at times, with one truly horrific/gross scene.
