What Were My Favorite July Mystery and Thriller Books?
The Ghostwriter had a 1970s vibe and some good family secrets drama.
King of Ashes is classic S.A. Cosby: dark, disturbing, gripping and somehow profound!
New Mystery and Thriller Books for the Week of June 3 2025

The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark
The Last Flight is a favorite of mine (and my website commenters) and this is getting very good early reviews.

What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown
I really enjoying this one! It’s more slow burn suspense and takes place in the 90s as the internet was taking off.
My Readers Guide to What Kind of Paradise, with lots of bonus content, is here!

We Don’t Talk About Carol by Kristen L. Berry
A former reporter digs into a family mystery. This is going on my list of Mysteries and Thrillers by Black Female Authors!
Check out my Readers Guide to We Don’t Talk About Carol

So Happy Together by Olivia Worley
A twisty tale of love and obsession perfect for fans of You by Caroline Kepnes!
Check out my Readers Guide to So Happy Together
Women Like Us by Katia Lief
The Expat Affair by Kimberly Belle
I reviewed The Paris Widow and really enjoyed it – this one might go on my list of Books Like Black Doves (or female forward political thrillers)
New Mystery and Thriller Books for the Week of June 10 2025

With a Vengeance by Riley Sager
This seems (technically) like a historical but I’m including it here! It was very Agatha Christie inspired. Maybe too much?
Check out my Readers Guide to With a Vengeance!

King of Ashes by SA Cosby
I was SO shocked to get an advance reader copy. This Southern Noir story inspired by The Godfather sounds intense and it is: violent, graphic, and very gripping!
My Readers Guide to King of Ashes, with Book Club Questions has all the details.

Death at the White Hart by Chris Chibnall
By the creator of Broadchurch, which I loved.
I had mixed feelings about this one and break it all down in my Readers Guide for Death at the White Hart, with Spoilers!

The Bachelorette Party by Camilla Sten
You know I can’t resist a Wedding Mystery, right?
This won’t be for everyone! I discuss why in my Readers Guide to The Bachelorette Party!

Kill Your Darlings by Peter Swanson
This book is like A Kind Worth Killing, but told backwards. I explain all in my Readers Guide for Kill Your Darlings, with Spoilers!

The Surf House by Lucy Clarke
This vacation thriller let me add a whole new continent to my post on Best Vacation Thrillers to read!

Jill is Not Happy by Kaira Rouda
This one sounds like a domestic thriller + a travel thriller.
Update: read this and it’s a good fit for fans of The Perfect Marriage/ The Perfect Divorce!
The Last Illusion of Paige White by Vanessa McCausland
New Mystery and Thriller Books for the Week of June 17 2025

Don’t Open Your Eyes by Liv Constantine
I think her (their?) books have only been getting better!
However, this one wasn’t my favorite. My Readers Guide to Don’t Open Your Eyes explains why.

Murder Takes a Vacation by Laura Lippman
This book takes a side characters from the Tess Monaghan series and tries to jump on the senior detective trend. (Tess herself might be a senior by now??)
This one had pros and cons for me which I discuss in my Goodreads review.
Fox by Joyce Carol Oates

Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds by Allison Brennan
Hoping this is as funny as it sounds – an avid readers goes on vacation and has to solve a murder.
Well! I’ve now read this and would call it light romantic suspense with some spice. I don’t really read that, but maybe you do, so here are my thoughts on Goodreads!
Shaw Connelly Lives to Tell by Gillian French
This sounds possibly good but I have not loved this author’s books in the past. If you try it and like it, let me know!

Someone Knows by Vi Keeland
YES — another suspense book about authors!
Wow, this one was spicy and a bit out there. I reveal all (and I mean ALL) in my Readers Guide to Someone Knows!
New Mystery and Thriller Books for the Week of June 24 2025

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell
Well, I have thoughts. I put them all in my Readers Guide to Don’t Let Him In!
My Readers Guide to Don’t Let Him In is here and you will need my character guide!

It Happened on the Lake by Lisa Jackson
I added this to a fun new post on Mysteries and Thrillers Set at a Lake
Smile for the Cameras by Miranda Smith
The Compound by Aisling Rawle

I didn’t realize this was a reality TV suspense story. And there are books on that list (linked just above) that I liked a lot more. If you’re really into Love Island, you might enjoy it though (I’m watching it right now and wondering if Toni the American is going to survive….)
My thoughts are here on Goodreads.
The Compound is a GMA Book Club Pick for July 2025!

Happy Wife by Meredith Lavender
Happy Wife is a Read with Jenna Pick for July 2025!
White Python World Tour by Travis Kennedy
This has something to do with an 80s hair band, so I’m officially curious! If you try it, please let me know if you liked it!

Proof by Jon Cowan
I love a legal thriller so I tried this. It was okay. I didn’t love it, but you might!
You can check out my review on Goodreads.
House on Buzzard’s Bay by Dwyer Murphy
A friends group with secrets in Cape Cod sounds up my alley. Readers seem to be enjoying it and I may get around to trying it!
New Installments in Popular Book Series

Fifty Fifty (Eddie Flynn #5) by Steve Cavanagh
This is a series book and US reissue of a 2020 UK release. I’m not sure why the publisher is releasing these out of order! Book 8 in the series, Witness 8, came out earlier this year.
Badlands (Nora Kelly #5) by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
The Secret Room (Maeve Kerrigan #12) by Jane Casey
The Death Mask (Eve Duncan #31) Iris Johansen
